Sorry I didn't post last night. I got home late from the Marshall Crenshaw concert (which I'll probably review tomorrow because I have another concert tonight). it's top two time in the list of my favorite songs with a generalized time of day in the title. Here's a repeat, and no big surprise, for the penultimate song. #2: Lipstick Sunset - John Hiatt Majestic, simply majestic. My favorite John Hiatt song by a country mile. One of the most perfect blends of gorgeous lyrics ("there's a lipstick sunset smeared across the August sky") and instrumentation (Sonny Landreth's beautiful slide guitar work) combined into one song in a long, long time. A semi-autobiographical song of love lost ("I couldn't tell her that her love was only killing me" [Hiatt's second wife committed suicide]) and found ("maybe I can only see as you take away the light, so hold me in the darkness"), I've maintained that this is John Hiatt's greatest song for thirty years. And, although I love his stuff before it and after it, there's no other song that comes close. And yes, there is a song that I love much, much more than this one.
