Called the "cuddle hormone" Oxytocin is released when we feel trust, comfort or love and can be even more powerful than serotonin. If you need a lift in mood remember this hormone. Simply spending time with family or friends can release the power of this hormone. It is usually significant in reproductive functions such as labor and the let down of milk for breast feeding. It also exerts many psychological effects and has an influence in social behavior and emotion. It shows up in high levels in couples during the first six months of a relationship. It may increase the ability of understanding and sharing feelings and emotional attachment. Research has shown that Oxytocin may have beneficial effects for those with autistic spectrum disorders. It also has potential for use in the treatment of irritable bowel disease. It protests the intestine from damage.
