Good afternoon. What is shoo fly pie,I have never heard of it till recently. Have anyone hear ever make this shoo fly pie. Why is it call shoo fly pie,where did this come from. Interesting name! I have never heard of it either. Are you supposed to shoo away the flies as you eat the pie? Or the pies will shoo away the flies because of the smell.

I love shoo fly pie and it's common here in Pennsylvania especially in Lancaster (Amish country) It's very very sweet

Thanks for sharing this. I have never heard of it before which set me off researching. Apparently it is originally a Dutch recipe so must have been exported to America from Holland. I guess the molasses (Black Treacle in English) attracted flies to the sweet pie. Hence the name shoo fly pie as you would have to shoo the flies away! How very interesting. We do have similar pies but usually we would use the lighter golden syrup rather than black syrup. Very interesting post !

I live in the south and honestly have never heard of it. It doesn't look bad but I am curious to know what's in it. And if anyone has ever tried it.
