The 'Secret' Codes of myLot

There are not really any secrets to myLot. I just put that because there are some things which people forget and new users don't notice. How does myLot work? Q: Hundreds of informational discussions have been posted on this subject but it's difficult to find them, isn't it? A: No, not really! Just click on 'Search'. Select 'Tagged Discussions' and type 'myLot 101' (Don't forget the space). Click the magnifying glass. The page that comes up shows all discussions which have been tagged with the phrase 'mylot 101' and somewhere on that page you are likely to find the answer to that burning question you had. You'll also find the answers to many questions you didn't even KNOW you needed the answers to! If you don't want to follow the procedure above, just click on the 'MYLOT 101' tag at the top of this discussion (the green boxes with white letters). In fact, you can click on any tag to see all the discussions (and responses and comments) which have been tagged with that exact word or phrase! How useful have you found tags? What features of myLot have you only discovered after using the site for a while?

I use the tags most of the time to find discussions that I might be interested in.

Tags can be useful but do have limitations. The main one is that many members do not select the most appropriate tags, which rather defeats the whole object.

I do occasionally forget to tag when it would have been useful to do so, especially when posting responses and comments.

I don't use the tags per se...but....I find they make other suggestions based on the tags. I've often followed that rabbit trail. It's led me to some very interesting discussions.

Many of the features I've only found after some time. I used to search for tags but I would guess at them. I didn't know about the green boxes till it was mentioned in a post - I think by Janet (@jaboUK).

In my first years in mylot, mylot categorized topics into sections like travel, movies, etc and when I returned after a long hiatus, I was surprised with the tags but overall even though I missed the categories format, I still think tagged discussions is a good replacement and is very helpful when looking for an old discussion.

Tags are more flexible than the Category system because you can give a discussion more than one tag and therefore put it into a number of different searchable 'categories'.

myLot 101 tag took me to posts that were related to myLot but those posts did not have the tag myLot 101. Having said that searching for the myLot tag took me to the same posts.

Many posts have been tagged with 'mylot 101', 'mylot101' and 'mylot', so there is bound to be some overlap. You cannot always see all of the tags which a discussion may have been tagged with but the list should contain all discussions tagged with that specific phrase, nonetheless.

@allknowing Ah! That is one of the real 'secrets'! Perhaps @JolietJake will provide you with his (definitive) answer but I think that, originally, "Room 101" was the torture chamber in Orwell's "1984". Quite how it came to be the place where one can find help on many things myLottian, I am not sure!

I didn't know about the "mylot 101" tag. I find tags useful in general but I also liked the old categorization.

Interesting, I didn't know. I discovered this today. I just tag some words with my discussion because of the statement, enter tags

Well I've now discovered tags so thanks for that ;) as one of the things I miss from the older days is the categories option but assuming the tags could do that job... Thanks for this info I'm going to get searching now

Yes, the old version had categories as well as tags. The categories feature was much abused and little understood and, in any case, you could only ever assign a discussion to one category. Tags are far more flexible and useful.

@owlwings yes there were the downsides to it especially the categories that were empty. I am particular with the discussions I want to get involved in though so maybe the tags will help me out now I've realised them lol As I was using the search bar but not the tag option, the 'full text discussion' search and was not getting much so now I know why I like discussion connected to family/pregnancy and mental health as opposed to general chats like music etc so hoping I can engage in what I enjoy

I usually comment on recent posts but back in the old mylot we were supposed to first look and see what discussions on the same topic were posted. We then were supposed to comment on that post instead of making our own about the same thing so I used to search for tags often. I rarely do now.

@changjiangzhibin89 That may be something to do with the fact that you are in China. I can't explain it otherwise. It means that, for some reason, your computer received an RST package ('reset' command). This can happen when the host server (myLot) sends it but also (much more likely in your case) when one of the servers in the chain of connection detects a connection failure or 'Port Unreachable' situation and sends the reset command. If you can see this page, it explains the error and suggests what you might do about it:

@owlwings Thank you for clearing it up !I know very little about computer so I am none the wiser after you explained everything, but find out the problem description in Chinese is the same as what you told me.
