Still Growing ....

I surprised myself today...  I was having a meal in a pub restaurant.., and ordered steak and chips... (sorry..don't  mean to offend any vegetarians out there), when the steak came and I started eating it,  it was as tough as old boots, I was very dissapointed, and was debating what to do... One of the british personality traits is ..., that we very rarely make official complaints, about food, or service, or people queue jumping and things like that. That's  not to say it doesn't  up set us, or ... that we do not complain to each other..., we do, but, we rarely actually complain to the offending party.... and, i'm the same, in many ways.  I am quite strong and assertive, especially at work, when standing up for the rights of the elderly, but, this is sadly lacking when it concerns, doing it for myself... But today ...., that changed, when the waiter came passed my table, I waived him down, of course, being british , I began by saying..., I'm sorry... Anyway, I went on to say, that I felt the steak, was tough, and that I was not satisfied  with the quality of my food,  there was  a momentary, earily silent, pause, and I was just wondering how to say I would like a replacement, I looked at the waiter for a few more  seconds and he said ..would you like another one ..? ( thank goodness, lol )  I had the feeling my resolve was about to dissolve ...lol I just thought i'd share this little victory, it may only be a small victory..., but you never know where these little steps lead... and that whatever age we are ...we can change...

It seems the british and filipinos have similar traits. We too can be passive-agressive. We complain only in our minds but we don't want to be confrontational but I am glad you were able to get past this personality trait and got a new steak!

I'm glad you said something. I did that too regarding a meal I had at a restaurant I like, and they actually gave me a discount on the bill.

It is good that they offered a second one to replace it, was it easier to manage?

I am Italian, but I never complain about food, service of people. Okay I am a northern and we are not considered "Italians" by the rest of Italy. Of course I tell my husband if something is wrong and I remember that one time in the United States when the waiter asked if everything was fine, my husband said that "my fish was so terrible that I would have never served something like this to my guests".... the waiter immediately proposed to change my food.

Oh I learnt to do that too - probably when I was about the age you are now. I have no qualms sending things back now.

Good for you. We would have done the same thing. I grew up as an American, we are not shy about such things.

I don't think I've ever complained about a meal either. We're much like the British in that regard.
