Sad for the farmers

I heard a radio report earlier: "We've had 100 days of snow on the ground." Lordy. I knew this stuff started then went no where in early December but what a statement to hear. Then the radio went on to say that farmers like snow cause it insulates the wheat in their fields. BUT have snow and ice covering wheat for over 100 days and something called snow mold starts up. Oh boy. The temps went up just above freezing for maybe an hour today. Not long enough to do any good when it comes to melting snow. We had glorious sunshine but no warmth. So we wait....

I feel sorry for farmers. There is always something happening weatherwise to upset their plans.

@JudyEv Me, too. I also feel sorry for me and mine, having to deal with ice and snow day after day.

I wonder how this is going to affect crops this year.

@sallypup .....I'm just afraid that a lot of it may be more expensive this spring and summer. I wish I could find a good cantaloupe. I haven't had a good one for several years. I enjoy them when they are ripe and sweet.

@celticeagle That question has been on my mind lately. I do love fresh Bing cherries.

@celticeagle Every year at the end of summer a Hispanic man parks his pickup in a parking lot on our main drag. That pickup truck's bed is filled to the gunnels with local, ripe cantaloupes. Sometimes the melons are so ripe they are too ripe. He also has watermelons. I wish you could be here then. You'd feast yourself crazy.

I hope that it gets better soon, but Portland and here, maybe, are predicted to get ice/snow for two days. You too, I suppose.

@Rohvannyn Another snow storm is supposed to come in tomorrow night and Saturday before warmth returns. I hope the 2 inch prediction is hog wash.

Interesting. Our snow stays from November to April as a rule. Maybe the ground is too frozen here for snow mold.
