Share An Office?

I am up in the air about sharing an office with hubby. Right now, we each have our own office. However, mine is smaller and colder in the winter months. When my laptop was working it did not matter because I would sit in the living room or at the dining room table. Now I work on the main computer (finally got it fixed) and hubby works on a laptop that his nephew gave him. We recently discussed moving my desk into hubby's office. I would then just turn my office into my crafting room and library. At this moment the pros are outweighing the cons on this venture. Pros Better Lighting. Warmer in the winter/Cooler in the summer. More room. More electrical sockets. Cons Hubby in the same room. Not enough quiet moments. The pros seem to outweigh the cons. I am going to talk to our tax preparer first before we make any decisions. Do you share an office space with anyone? How does that work for you?

Those 2 cons are fixable. All you'd need is a way to create some kind of half divider so that some of the noise might be muffled. As for hubby, hummmm, is there anything you do that irritates him enough to make him want to leave the room?

@rebelann Nah, he would not be aggravated by me I am afraid I would be aggravated by him. He like to watch youtube videos and he would constantly interrupt me to watch them with him.

Yes, I share the office space with my husband since year 2000. As we started working together exactly 47 years ago (5th of February 1970), we have the habit to stay together.

@Shellyann36 For some couples is very hard to work together, it takes a bit of time to get the habit, but then it's not so bad.

That sounds like a good idea to me since it’s obvious based on your list that the pros outweigh the cons. Why do you need to talk to the tax preparer though?

@Shellyann36 When my husband was alive his cousin did his taxes for only $50. Actual tax offices charge so much we were so lucky he did it for us so cheap! The only problem was that we had to mail all the information from PA to Florida and then wait for him to do it and either mail it back or send it up with relatives. One time it was late and we had to pay a penalty.

@shaggin Ouch! No one likes penalties from the IRS. I am so glad that now there is software online so people can do their own taxes. It makes things so much easier.

We did share the office and it became a pain in the kiester. He wanted to go see a family friend that does taxes for a living. He was a big bunch of crock in my opinion. I ended up doing our own taxes.

My husband has no use for an office - the great outdoors is his office. We don't even share a TV!

No. I live alone. Even when I didn't, I didn't share an office. It might be a good idea to talk to your tax preparer. You might not be able to share an office.

@just4him I am going to find out first. I don't want to take away anything that can be used as a tax deduction.

Oh thanks for reminding me @paigea I really need to get back into decluttering. I've noticed so much dust covering all those things I thought I could use one day ...... one day doesn't seem to come so it's time to give up

@rebelann mine has become less organized since this post. And how many layers of dust under all that stuff!!!? Funnily though, this week I did wash and organize 2 shelves in one cupboard in the office. And I have been slowly listening to our CDs, that are in another office cupboard, and managed to get rid of 2 Decluttering

No I do not, but I have to sit in the living room with people talking and the TV on very loud while I am trying to concentrate on writing.

@dfollin that is horrible. A loud tv or radio is so distracting. I can sometimes tune out the chitter chatter around me but radios and tv's really do bother me if they are really loud.

My "office" is in the living room. It's not too bad.. yes the TV is in here, but we don't use the TV much. If hubby is home he might be playing video games but that doesn't bother me. It's when someone is watching a show or movie that it bothers me because I don't do well with background noise.

@katsmeow1213 I like background noise, I often listen to the radio while I work. I think my main problem with him would be the fact that he would interrupt me constantly to look at this youtube video or something else along the same lines.

My office.
I share my office with my husband but it is rare for him to get on my desktop or use the printer.

@PatZAnthony If my laptop were working it would be great. Hubby has a laptop but the power source and battery are not working right. He has to keep it plugged in and sitting a certain way for the cord to fit into the back right.

@PatZAnthony That is what I am feeling myself. I don't want to raise the electric bill. For now, we are sharing the office and the desktop. He cannot get his laptop to work right now. I can't wait until we do get our taxes back and I can get a new laptop.

@Shellyann36 It seems just keeping your own space might be best on one hand, however, being all for saving money, you know I would not want to heat an extra room.

My husband and I have two desks side by side, the phone (land line is on his desk and the computer is on mine. Between the two desks is the file cabinet that we share and its always worked for us. When he's talking on the radio, I make myself disappear so there is no distraction.. but that is not often.

As you said, the pros outweigh the cons. Since you are both on computers and laptops, it seems quiet. I have my own office and my hubby has his. It makes no difference. He still enters my space to gab. I should mention that we are both retired.

My desk and computer is in a corner of the living room. Not much privacy but I don't use the computer for anything other than fun. Sounds like you have more pros for moving into the office with your hubby and a craft room would entice me to make the move

@Marilynda1225 The craft room idea is very enticing for me. I already have my craft desk in my office but it is not set up the way I want it. We shall see how it goes.

Right now, at work, I have my own office. I like it that way. At home, both my wife and I have separate "offices." I like it that way too.
