I got paid and was thanked for my work!

I don't work - I've been retired from working for 16 years. But I still get paid once a month - and not just from Social Security!
I have been writing for a friend's blog for about two years. One article a week and I get paid an amount we agreed to. It's not a lot of money, but it's not a lot of work either. Actually, she did give me a raise a while ago.
But what I like best is there is always a note with the PayPal notice saying something like, "I appreciate you" or "Good job, thanks". It is nice to know that what I do is appreciated and important.
My last job in the real working world was a great job with a horrible boss. He wasn't big on compliments but he was big on negativity. I could have stood on my head and spit wooden nickles and he would have said, "Can't you spit quarters instead?"
Seriously, I am so glad I get to pick and choose what I do with my life and my time!

That is great. Yes, retirement can be grand. I used to write articles for a group online but quit last year. They just expected too much. I am glad just to do Mylot and a few others here and there. Nice to pick and choose.

@celticeagle When I was a featured travel writer at AC/Yahoo I did that too but that was for more money!

Writing for the blog gives me a place to really describe some of the places we've visited. And I can put lots of photos!

Many of us have worked for those negative types. Not having to deal with those people is a good thing!

@PatZAnthony I do chuckle when I see his photo - he dyes his hair and his 'stash' black...he was grey when I worked for him LOL!

I only stuck it out for 10 years because of the money and benefits. He is on FB and every time I see his ugly mug I want to throw up.

It's great to be in a position where you can pick and choose like that. A little note of appreciation always lifts spirits - but I remember my last boss never did that. After many years of hearing his negativity, I just got used to it . . . the co-workers and I could joke about it. But I felt sorry for his wife who also worked with the company and with him . . . she had to live with this 24/7.

@AbbyGreenhill I think my boss' wife would have been what people would call "sweet", but it seemed life with him made her bitter. He had a nasty tongue and she had to defend herself constantly - but I think a bit of him rubbed off on her.

@much2say This couple had been married abut 20 years at that point and I think she knew how poorly she treated me and his 7 managers. So I do believe she was a nice person and tried even harder to be nice to make up for him.

That poor lady. My former boss had a very nice wife, very soft spoken and a gentle lady - so different from him and his gruff ways.

I am happy for you, my friend.
Work would be enjoyable if you have a kind and considerate boss. Even if the pay isn't much, you would want to be working with her or him for a long time. And that's what I am feeling with the company I am employed with.

In my 35 plus years of working I had three different 10 year jobs - all other bosses were good, this one was the exception to the rule!

Lack of employee appreciation is another big reason many people have opted to become self employed only taking on work that they enjoy doing. Working for oneself isn't always great in the sense of study cash flow unless what you do is in high demand or pays well to begin with other wise you have to be pretty popular well liked to ensure you have income coming in weekly.
