Could you live without a refrigerator?

February 9, 2017 12:49pm CST
A friend of mine just moved into a new apartment he recently bought. He still has no refrigerator, so he still has to face some problems for lack of it. But he told me he can live without a refrigerator for a long time. I keep wondering how he can do it.

I guess it depends where you live and what the climate is like. If you can pick up perishables each day it wouldn't be so hard.

Well, I guess he doesn't cook. Or at least he doesn't store fresh food. I have to feed a whole family, so there is no way I could live without one (not the way we live or eat anyway).

I think so. When I moved this year, I have been without a refrigerator during several weeks and it was alright. I do my shopping twice a week, I do not buy a lot, and except meat and milk anything else can be kept out of a refrigerator quite as long. A couple of good friends have never had a refrigerator, because they do not feel the need of it.

@coffeebreakwhatever They live like myself in the center of the city and they buy their meat/fish/milk/bread everyday near their house. Our eggs do not need any refrigerator (they are not washed in Europe), as well as fruits and vegetables. Yes, it is more expensive than to do shopping once a month in a large supermarket, but you have better quality in small shops (the butcher is choosing the animals he will sell, the dairyman sells local milk and cheese that cannot be found in a supermarket, the bread is really made by the baker, etc.) and a real human contact.

I guess we all can, many years ago they didn't have refrigerators and they had other solutions. But we don't have to live without it, technology helps us improve our lives. A refrigerator can actually help us save money because we can but more products when they are on offer and store them for later.

If your friend doesn't like eating ice cream, then it is no problem for him to be without a refrigerator. As to me, we prefer to cool soda, so it is better for us to have a refrigerator. Especially we have some leftovers and we need the refrigerator.

Yes I can and in the past have lived without a refrigerator for 5 years but now have one again. I can buy more at one time with a fridge. Before, the stores were a little closer to home and I had a car and so was passing by the stores every day so I didn't need one.

I can't live without refrigerator. We keep leftover foods there and stock some fresh food. I also want cold water. Maybe some can live without it if they are used to

Yes .Refrigerator is not Oxygen . Our luxury and basic things are determined by us not the society.

When we first moved out into the country, there were no electric lines. The house had a refrigerator but without the electricity connected for 3 months, we used a cooler with ice in it to hold our perishables @TheInvisibleMan .

I could not live without one. In the summer I need to put things inside it in the summer. Things get hot.

I had an uncle who wouldn't buy one and that meant freshly cooked food at every meal...summer is so hot it spoils. But then after he retired they got one as age had caught up and it was easier with a fridge around.

In the winter here it would be possible. All of the best foods are in a refrigerator though and in the summer it would be hectic! No thanks.

I would find it very difficult. I did spend a summer once with just a mini-fridge. I was grateful for it but it only held a very limited amount. I once had a meal cooked for me by a lady who then proceeded to tell me that she had no fridge and just kept meat outside the back door in the cold. I had no ill effects but then this was in the winter. I wouldn't have been happy if it had been July!

You can if you eat out all the time, fix pbj sandwiches, eat packaged goods and have an ice chest.

Yes, of course I can. I have to buy fresh veggies almost everyday but other food can be stored without fridge.

Most definitely, because that's how cave men and women did. It will limit you on what to buy. But I think so
