Lactose Intolerance strikes again!

When I was a child, I could eat pretty much anything I wanted. Yogurt, cheese, ice cream, milk, cream, no problem. All that changed in high school. I recall eating a yogurt in the cafeteria and becoming nauseous. That nausea quickly became stomach cramps, dizziness and a very fast and embarrassing run to the lavatory that resulted in me being late to my next class. Ever since, I've been very careful and sparing about my dairy consumption. Until this past Thanksgiving where my cousin's absolutely stellar mac and cheese couldn't be passed up. The result was on a level I've never experienced before and don't want to ever again. Let's just say, I had to get my husband to help peel me off the bathroom floor. Well. I just ate some chips (or crisps, depending on where you're from). Did you know that "salsa queso" flavor is enough to cause gastric distress?? I do now.

Oh poor you. It must be difficult having to watch what you eat. (I love your laconic last line)

It really is! Starbucks became really big while I was in college and I would frequently forget to ask for my drinks with soy

Should say so. I have noticed that a lot of these frozen Lasagnas and Canelones and things like that have a cheese in them now or there is something in the Cheese that I cannot tolerate either. I love to eat them but they are not in love with me. I have to make everything fresh as I can. I am okay with the cheese on Pizzas for some reason does not affect me but anything with cheese sauce that is already made I have had it too. We are not the only ones either you can check it out too.

I like how you phrase that: I like them but they do not like me. I have recently come across a vegan cheese that melts and tastes like the real thing!

@AranciataRoss Does that suit you well then? I find that all those Cream of this and that vegetables don´t suit me either but I don´t despair as they are putting things in there that were never there before. Soy protein is another one horrible. Best make our own food as much as we can. Glad the cheese suits you though.

@lovinangelsinstead21 I am not a fan of the soy products. This vegan cheese is made from some starches and oils that help it work like a real cheese. Either way, it's a sometimes food.

I have heard about this lactose intolerance and it happens mostly with seniors. You could be an exception. Not being able to eat food that has milk in it could be quite a disappointment. Having said that there are many food allergies that others go through. It is a question of acceptance.

They are changing the food so much that no one is tolerating that kind of prefabricated stuff anymore. They get younger and younger the ones that cannot metabolize it. Packet Soups are just an example. A Specialist told me to avoid them like the plague he must surely know what he is talking about.

Yep. Won't do that again- cheese flavoring/additives is enough to cause the reaction.

I'm so sorry you are lactose intolerant. I don't eat salsa, so I didn't know that. I'm sorry you had trouble with it.

Thanks. I feel a bit better now. Some tea calmed my upset tummy. The flavor was actually salsa with cheese. Tomato or tomatillo based salsas never give me a problem. I'll stick with that from now on.
