When I bought my DSLR, the seller told me usually I could take good photos with the mode "P" (program). And I follow it. But sometimes I will also try the mode "A" (aperture priority), especially when I take a photo for people. Occasionally when I take a night view photo, I will try the mode "S" (shurter priority). Of course it is better for me to make the camera stay stable at first.

Did you not try to ask for photopgrahy tips from your friends who are into the photography hobby(especially those using DSLRs)?

Those professional photographers may use manual mode mainly

@youless Yes, they use it manually and that's exactly what you should ask for - the tips in doing the settings manually :)

I usually use the 'P' mode but if I want to control the depth of field (so that, for example, only the near objects are in focus and the background is out of focus) I would use the 'A' setting with a large aperture and if I am taking a picture of a fast-moving object, I would use the 'S' (shutter priority) setting with a fast shutter speed (or a very slow one if I am taking pictures of fireworks or a night shot).

@youless Well, of course one needs a tripod for long exposures (and when using a very long telephoto lens) because camera shake then becomes a problem.

@owlwings Since my tripod is big and heavy, I have never brought it outside. I have a small tripod but I also don't use it.

Exactly! But if we use a very slow shutter to take photos of the fireworks or night view, it is better to use the tripod.

I use automatic so I dont have to adjust. My boyfriend likes Manual (M setting)

I could not understand all these things on cameras or what they mean. But I do not have a good camera. I want one so badly. It is on my wish list youless. I am happy you are making the most of your camera. You will share some photos hopefully with us soon. Maybe even you will take a photo of your camera somehow for us to see how nice it is haha

In fact you can read the camera instruction book carefully at first. After that, reading some books about photography and it will be so helpful.

It seems that the mode "P" can do something intelligently than the auto mode.
