I Guess I'm Missing Something Yet Again

A tragic story has developed in northwestern Indiana. Two girls, one 14 and one 13, were found murdered along a hiking trail near Delphi, which is near Lafayette (home of Purdue University). The two girls were dropped off on a hiking trail near an abandoned railroad bridge by a family member on Monday. When they didn't return they were reported missing. Their bodies were found the next day.
So I'm missing something here. It wouldn't be the first time.
First, it was Monday. Shouldn't these kids have been in school?
Secondly, and far more significantly, who on this earth lets a 13-year-old and a 14-year-old kid go out in the wilderness by themselves? Yes, I may have been protected by my mother when I was that age, but we aren't talking about going to Janie's house for a sleep-over. We're talking about letting two children walk on a railroad bridge near a river without any supervision or protection!
Police have a photograph of a man seen in the area at the same time the kids were dropped off (which is another red flag to me: my mom never let me go to the school playground if she saw older kids, especially guys only, hanging out...she'd just drive on past it).
I don't know which is worse to me: the crime itself, or what I consider lackadaisical decision-making by the parents.

I am sure that that parents are feeling a lot of guilt over this right now. Things like this happen and I wouldn't blame the parents compleltely for it. I was a very protective parent too so I know how you feel but I wouldn't want to make the parents feel any worse then they already do. I am sure they never even dreamed something like this would happen.

@sugartoes Yes I agree that is sad. I always think of the dangers in every situation. It is hard to imagine people not thinking that way but some parents don't.

@sugartoes Oh I agree!! This should never have happened because those young girls should not have been there in the first place!

@sugartoes It is heartbreaking. Their lives were cut short so soon. They didn't even have a chance to live and what they went through must have been horrific. It never should have happened.

I agree. I would checking out who 'dropped them off' and what they were thinking. Parents need to be responsible these days.

This could have happened on a day off of school. Not really familiar with the story, but there will be no happy ending, regardless.

I have not seen this on the news yet. However I have learned to reserve judgement as the 'facts' are not always present and second guessing the situation is often misleading. Popular trail, kids out of school and want to go for a walk. They were not alone they were together, two friends walking. Some one killed them - I blame the killer and that is all.

If the parents had actually acted like parents, there likely would have been no crime.

I totally agree with your point.I can quote a similar type of event happened in Chennai last week. One 7 year girl child was left alone when the parents went out for shop ping along with there 3 year old son.The girl was playing inside the apartment premises along with her friends. But later when all her friends left back to there homes she was all alone. Then her neighbor who was a software engineer asked her to come home to play with his dog. The girl innocently went with him and that guy tried to molest the girl. Then when the girl tried to raise an alarm that 22 year old guy closes her mouth with some cloth.Due to suffocation the girl lost her breathe and closed her eyes.
So here the primary culprit would be the parents itself. How can they leave such a small kid unattended.
