Door To Door Salesmen

Have you ever bought something from a door to door salesman that ended up being a really good product and you are just really glad you bought it? That happened to me and my husband back in May of 2001.
Our vacuum cleaner had died and we literally were a day or two away from going to Wal-Mart or Sears to buy a new one, when a door to door salesman came to our door selling a vacuum called a Tri Star. We let him demonstrate how it worked and even though it was more expensive than we had planned to spend on a vacuum, he told us that the quality of the product should last a long time and that it would end up paying for itself because we would not have to buy a vacuum for many years. The only thing we would have to buy are the filters that trap the dirt.
So, we bought it. And it is true. It has lasted a nice long time. We still use it today and it still sucks up the dirt with the great power that it had when first bought.
That was one door to door salesman that was truly a legit guy. I am glad he came around when he did. I am glad he was not a scammer.

I have never heard of a Tri Star vaccum. I had a traveling salesman demonstrated a Kirby vacuum for me. I wanted it so bad as it pulled so much dirt out of my very old carpets. It was to expensive though it was over $1000. I wound up buying a Dyson instead on eBay for $400. I have been using it for about 7 years now and the warranty guarantees 5 years so I have definitely gotten my money's worth. Before this I had to get a new vacuum every 2 years when I was buying the cheap ones from Walmart.

We bought a Dyson, returned it - hated it. Bought Oreck hated it sold it. Now my husband uses a Shark and he does all the vacuuming.

Yes it is good you still have that vacumn.

No one comes to our door - not even on Halloween! I don't think I would let them in if they did come. You were lucky. Times have changed in 17 years...

I bought a Kirby from a door to door salesman many years ago. I sold Avon for many years going to every door on my street and had many customers. Recent years I have bought from Schwan's, who left a book at my door.

Did you do well selling Avon? I have thought about doing that.

never bought anything from a salesman - never see them nowadays in the age of the internet, the brush, bible and encyclopedia salesman is an endangered species

My mother used to buy from door to door salesmen and got me my first real job that way selling magazines over the phone. Lol! No one sells anything in our town. We don't even have a store. I'm glad your vacuum cleaner works so well after all these years.

I did door to door and it was quite an experience. I used to sell Electrolux. Those were the days. Times are different, now. Go to any Sears store and you will see them on sale.

Over the years my partner has bought some very good items from people who put catalogues door-to-door, for example for Avon, Kleeneze and Betterware. Sadly nowadays the callers seem to be dodgy-looking garden clearers, etc, and we don't do business with them!
I think an honoourable salesperson with a decent product shows a lot of courage by selling door-to-door. The number of scammers around must make it so much harder for them nowadays.
