Happiest Place to Live

Where is it you lived when you were the happiest? According to the website PureWow, the 5 happiest states in America are: 1. Hawaii, 2. Alaska, 3. South Dakota, 4.Maine, and 5. Colorado. Hawaii is no surprise, although the cost of living is high I guess the beauty of the ocean makes up for some of that. Alaska surprised me though since it is so remote, and life is harsh compared to the other states. I have a cousin who lives there though, and he said the sense of community is very high. It's not a highly populated state, so everyone bands together. When the state listed South Dakota they mentioned the low level of financial stress, and the high amount of safety the residents feel. Apparently, even if it isn't a hugely populated place, those that actually live there are very happy with where they are at. I love Colorado. I'd love to live there if I couldn't be where I am. But I'm most surprised California wasn't listed. I lived there a short while, and most people seemed to love it. Of course, the cost of living is pretty high there as well. *This is just a random, fun, article, and nothing is meant to be definitive.

This seems to be a post for those living in the US. Nevertheless I will respond. Depends which part of one's life is spent and where. Although I like Solitaire my present abode. I have had indelible memories spent at my mother's as a child and my prime life spent in a city.

I've only lived in California . . . in the same area I grew up in . . . so this is all I know! Hubby would say the same. We are fairly happy here . . . it's diverse and we have everything from mountains, to deserts, to beaches here (plus access to almost anything in the world). The cost of living here is high, but like I said we have been here all our lives and don't know any better (although we read the numbers in other states or even cities and cringe how high we pay!).

I think I'd love to stay in Alaska for a short amount of time. I watch a vlogger who relocated from Cali to Alaska and he absolutely loves it. It is harsher conditions and you have to get used to the sun like never setting haha!

That's interesting. Not being American I could never have guessed but I can understand the choice of Hawaii.

Who knows what the result would be if everyone was polled. How about where you live? Is there a particular part of your country people seem to like better?

@AmbiePam From what I could find out it seems the happiest people live out of the big cities and in more rural areas.

I think I'm the happiest at my childhood home that has now been demolished to make way for a container park. I can't even go back there to walk down memory lane.

I would love to live in New England once again if I had my choice. It just suits me to a tee. Though I live in the place you would like to live..Colorado, it does have its advantages.

Actually I am pretty happy where I live in Ohio. Sure we can have bad winters (we didn't this year), but overall, we rarely get bad storms, tornadoes usually hit north and south of us, but we get the excitement of seeing some major storms. However, knowing where you live, I know that isn't the case, you are very close to tornadoes, I beleive one was only a block away a few years ago?

@AmbiePam Because with so many online friends not only here, but on other sites, it can get confusing unless that friend is always posting about where they live. Like on Facebook, I'm sure if I paid more attention, I have more than 3 friends in California, but off the top of my head, I only know 3. One is my neighbor's daughter, the other two are always talking about where they live.

I lived in Hawaii and I wasn't all that happy. Of course, I was stationed there, and they locals didn't really appreciate the military. As for California, the part of it I visited (Southern California) is very pretty, but there's so much you have to deal with: earthquakes, fires, floods, earthquakes, crime, lots of regulations, earthquakes, droughts, and did I mention earthquakes?

@AmbiePam -- I understand that (I live in the mini-tornado alley), but at least you have warning for tornadoes.

I have cousins in California, they worry about the high cost of living, the possibility of earthquakes, the weather, the busy lifestyle that is CA, and they are looking to move to Nevada as a result. I like my corner of southwestern Ontario, here in Canada. Its home to me and makes me happy as my loved ones live here.

@AmbiePam The tornadoes terrify me, and I'm a long way from Oklahoma, but I clearly remember the fear in some of your discussions from last year. Speaking of which, that season begins in another couple of months doesn't it?

@Juliaacv Yes, it does. May is usually the biggest month. April through September are the danger months.

Hawaii doesn't surprise me. I think I'd be happy with year round summer. Colorado doesn't surprise me either. South Dakota did surprise me.

California wouldn't make the list with high taxes, now flooding, high crime in larger cities, freeway traffic, sales tax, low home ownership and how hard it is to work a full time job. Recent years many stores have closed and the ones that are open can't afford to keep their full time people and that means more people looking for work.

I have only ever lived in PA. I would love to at least visit Hawaii it is such a beautiful place! I am shocked as well about Alaska being on the list. I would never want to live there. My boyfriend is going there this summer I believe to visit relatives. He has traveled a lot in life but not there yet.

California is probably due to the higher taxes. NY also has high taxes, and we get a ton of snow too! I think I'd be crazy happy living in Hawaii
