When Is A Buddhist Not A Buddhist?

Among my pet infuriations is people who have statues of Buddha all over their homes without being Buddhists, and often being people who argue / fight with one another quite aggressively. Buddhism being very much about peace, pacifism and inner calmness. Such statues are often sold to tourists visiting China, India, Thailand, etc. and through New Age paraphanalia shops. They end up decorating guest rooms, hallways and gardens, everywhere with small Buddhas even worn as necklaces. A few people owning such Buddhas own a few books and pamphlets on Buddhism, and claim to sit saying OM for a few minutes each day, probably convincing themselves that they are Buddhists. In reality the nearest they get to Nirvana is owning a Kurt Cobain album. Youtube – Nirvana - Arthur Chappell

i also like to point out that Buddhist is all about "nothingness".. having a statue kinda defeats the purpose

@Drosophila yes, having a copy of a Buddha when he denounced having possessions is weird

@arthurchappell and Buddha will tell you that the world as we know it including himself doesn't exist.. so having a statue of him is kinda missing le point

It is the same for people with crucifixes all over their homes.

haha, these are the ones who sit down to say OM, then call up friends to arrange for a hunting trip! The karmic action will prove that they are not Buddhists. Many Buddhists do not eat meat, do not buy leather products, and they definitely do not hunt.

I own a couple of Buddha's for decorative reasons. And because I like them. I do not pretend to be a yogi vegan om-chanting Buddhist. I do have an interest {and a degree} in religion. I also have a glass angel, a Golem and a bunch of religious books, like The Book of Mormon. :)

You are SO right. There are these sorts of people in all religions. It is really hypocritical and I find it hard to stomach.

I think those Buddha statues and decorations are ugly. I wouldn't want them in my home unless I was Buddhist. I love Nirvana by the way that was the best part of this post for me haha.
