I have always avoided negative people like that and am glad to say I know no one like that now. They are what can be called false friends.

I fully understand what you are saying. I can relate. This is very much like the male partner in a marriage who thinks the little house wife should remain at home, barefoot and pregnant and any idea of her getting a job is unthinkable. I know a person who was treated like a second class person, treating her like she had no right to even think of going out and being successful at a job, and that dinner was expected when HE got home from his work. Yea. I get that.

My late mother used to caution me about using the word "hate". Every time I see or hear the word, a vision of my mother wagging her finger at me and going "Don't say hate!" pops up. To add on to the memory, people these days keep quoting song lyrics by Taylor Swift "Haters gonna hate!" The word is so pronounced that it's hard for me to focus on anything else being discussed. OK. Now that I've gotten past the word HATE, the response to your question "Eh! So what! I'm too old to care about it."

Sadly it is more or less human nature... about success thing, there is a german word shadenfreude which means that people are relieved if they hear someone is doing bad or worse, not because they want something bad for that person, but because they know someone is in a worse situation... psychological thing, we all have it... :/
