Listening to Audiobooks

the local library gives you subscription access to Hoopla, which streams audiobooks (as well as music, movies, etc) if you have a library card. You can order up to 10 titles per month. I find it to be a nice service and I like listening to books being read although I find that my ability to concentrate varies from one situation to another. Sometimes I can work on one thing with a book going on in the background just fine. Other times I find that I tend to zone out and realize that I haven't been paying attention for a minute or two, and have to rewind. The best time to listen I've found is when I'm taking a walk, because then there's minimal distraction. Recently I've been trying to tackle Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand, which I'm curious about since it keeps coming up in contemporary political debates. The darn thing is 62 hours long! And I've found that it's very demanding of my attention to keep up with. Compare to my other current book on order: The Prince by Machiavelli. It's a little over 3 hours which means I'll have time to listen to it more than once before the subscription runs out, so if I miss anything on the first pass, it will be reinforced on the second or 3rd. Do you like audiobooks? Have any favorite performances that you've listened to? (hearing books by Christopher Hitchens read by the author was a real treat for me with that deep British accent of his)

@Marty1 the CD player has a pause button as does the feature when listening on my iPad. My iPad I carry from room to room. The CD player tends to stay put in my sewing room.

that's great. I haven't tried Overdrive. What books have you been listening to?

I love audiobooks! I haven't heard of hoopla though but I might check it out later. The audiobooks I love listening to are usually about inspiration, motivation etc. Most of them from John Maxwell. However, there is this rather interesting book that I'm particularly fond of and it is called "the 48 laws of power" the voice in that audio book sounds cunning. lol. But I really enjoy listening to it every now and then.

ask at your local library. It's a service that you usually have to pay for, but the library buys a subscription for you.

I have never listened to an audiobook, I am not so much of an audio person, more visual.

Atlas Shrugged is 62 hours when listening. That equals what in reading hours? Oh, the same! Anyway, hope you enjoy this service. We must have it here too.

When we were doing quite a lot of long driving we'd listen to audio books. We don't so much now though. And you're right - it is easy for your attention to wander.

It must be a great experience listening to audio books, but I have to recognize that I do not listen to one since over years. When I was a child, I had some cassettes of audio books to which I listened.

My late husband used to listen to audio books but I hate them. I saw that our library has some kind of online audio book rentals but I didn't pay much attention. When I go tomorrow I will see if it is called Hoopla... the only hoopla I know is an ice cream place.

I have listened to audiobooks, yet I'd say they're not really my thing. I'm like you when it comes to my attention span. Sometimes I can concentrate just fine, other times I zone out.
