I live in the US and we don't generally have access to British food items. And, when I WAS in England, I didn't try the curry sauce they would offer for chips (fries) because I had never tasted it before. I don't like gravy on my fries like some here in the States do, but I do like cheese. And, I like Curry, but wasn't sure how spicy it was, so didn't want to order it to find I didn't like it.
At some point in the past, I found this sauce mix here in one of the two places locally that sell British food items - either our Wegman's grocery that has a vast International section or the British Chip Shop store in nearby Haddonfield. I realized I could try it at my leisure. Then I forgot I had it. So, it lingered, apparently in the far recesses of the pantry.
I was looking for my mother's Paprika the other day when I came upon it at the far back of the spice shelf (arm's length deep) and decided the time had come. Yes, it was old. And, the "best by" date was old enough it had faded. But, it was still sealed, so I opened it and discovered nothing was amiss.
I followed the directions and made a pan full of sauce and immersed an already cooked chicken leg quarter into it covering it with a lid and left it on simmer.
It was perfect!! In fact, the curry flavor is really really mild, so this would be a great introductory curry option for people wanting to try something new. And, there's plenty of sauce left, so I plan to make some pork curry with some cubes I cut up yesterday along with some onion and carrots. I might have to make a bit more sauce to go along, but that's OK. I have plenty. A pan of rice on the side and I'll have a yummy meal.

more of a sweet curry than a spicy one though as a lot of curry sauces from chippy's have raisins and sultanas in and generally are quite sweet.

I did notice that it was on the sweet side, but not too sweet. And there was a hint of heat in it. I could add more curry powder (really an Americanized version of garam masala) if I wanted, but it was very tasty as it was. Plus, coconut milk would have added sweetness, too, so it was probably better that I didn't have any. I do like fruit in things like that, though. I wouldn't be too hurt by it.
