Cut onions makes you cry?

February 28, 2017 5:33pm CST
I've never cried cutting onion and I think this is a "myth" (I just have no idea why it was created). The most that I think happens is a slight irritation in the eyes, but nothing that makes me shed tears. Unlike me, my girlfriend cries copiously every time she decides to cut onion. Anyone have any idea why this happens? How do you feel about it?

I looked this up a couple months ago. When you cut an onion. This reacts with the water in your eyes and makes you have tears in your eyes.

I have cried while cutting onions. I would like to know myself why an onion makes one cry.

No I'm ok, it doesn't make me cry when cutting onions.

Depends on the onion, how many you are cutting and if you had it in the refrigerator before you started cutting it. I cut onions all the time. I can do so without tears on 19 out of 20 onions, but one that releases the right vapors makes me teary in a moment. Generally, if you keep the onion in the refrigerator, it will lessen the effect of the vapors and you won't even get a stinging sensation. If you cut up a fresh onion (especially a watery one) it releases a lot of vapors and if it is painful enough, it will make your eyes water. When I suffer from an onion, I have to turn away because my eyes will water like crazy. I can power through if I want to, but I hate doing so, so I'd rather just stop for a moment.

Let me say that the solution in the picture is the most clever thing I've seen this month. Bravo

Well, I did get a bit teary, not crying buckets like I saw in cartoon once. That really was exaggerating.
