This house was owned by Derick Sutfin at the time of the American Revolution and it stands on the battlefield where the Battle of Monmouth was fought on 28 June 1778. Derick lived there with his wife and four of their eight children. It is said that they owned slaves and that the slave sleeping quarters were in the upstairs loft.
You can see the house is in quite bad shape but it always fascinated me. I had shot it from a number of perspectives before venturing close to it one day. I wanted to shoot up-close but the whole time I was there I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being watched. It got to the point where I had to leave. It turns out that I am not the only one to experience such things and discovered there had been a number of paranormal investigations over the years. I actually participated in one myself in 2015.
The image here was created using the NIK Siver Efex Pro plug-in Lightroom. I wanted to recreate the look of an old 19th century image.

I was never much of a history buff but once I started hiking around the battlefield I became more interested. This is a great site and it was a bit awe-inspiring the first time I was there, knowing that I was walking along the same route as General George Washington during the battle.

A great house and you have really given it an honor. Very few people will remember such events and the objects related to the past. Thanks a lot.

Thank you! I have shot this house so many times over the past four years. My wife used to ask what I shot each day and she eventually gave up because it was usually the Sutfin House....
