Have you ever lost your keys?

I got into quite a panic when I lost mine yesterday.
When I took my car keys out of my pocket they pulled the house keys out with them, and those fell to the floor. It was raining at the time so that probably muffled the sound when they hit the ground and I was unaware of what had happened. I didn't notice they were missing until I got home.
Luckily my Mom was with me and she had keys with her. I hate to think what would have happened if neither of us had keys as the place I lost them was about an hour away and had already closed for the night.
Thankfully a parking attendant found them and kept them safe, so I got them back today.
Have you ever lost your keys? Did you get them back or were they lost forever?

I don't think I've ever lost my keys, but I've locked them in my vehicle before. I also locked myself out of the house once with the keys inside, and had to take apart a window to get in.

@connierebel Both happened to me a long time ago. My Mom and I once locked ourselves out of the house but we were able to phone my Dad to let us in. And the time I locked my keys in my car was at home, so I was able to go inside and find my spares. I'm really glad I've never had to take anything apart to get inside.
What happened yesterday was much more frightening.

@Gina145 Yes, that would be very frightening. It's good you were able to get them back.

Hide a spare key outside, so that will never happen again.

Yes, I've misplaced keys - car keys , apartment keys, house keys - but I've managed to get them back.
Not the best of feelings realizing you lost your keys but the relief you get from getting your keys back is like no other.

@allen0187 The relief was amazing. I was lucky that I knew where I'd lost them. If I'd been shopping at a big mall that day I wouldn't have known where to look and might never have found them.

@bagarad It's the first time it's ever happened to me but something similar happened to my Dad once and it was also at an out of the way place. At home I've got a few places I keep my keys depending on where I'm likely to need them next, so I usually know exactly where they are. I've lost lots of other things around the house though and sometimes it can be quite difficult to find them when I need them.

@bagarad Funny you mention that about keys left in the car. The day I lost mine somebody I know left her keys in the ignition with the radio running in a public place. She was totally unaware that she didn't have them until she returned to the car hours later. Remarkably both the keys and the car were still there!
I think everyone has some memory issues sooner or later so hopefully your doctor is right.

@LadyDuck I think it's much less likely to lose keys from a handbag but I stopped keeping mine there after my Mom's bag was stolen a few years ago. Luckily she'd just taken her keys out of her bag when it happened. If she hadn't the thief would have had her keys and her home address and we'd have had to get all our locks changed in a hurry.

@LadyDuck Most of the time I wear jeans so I've always got pockets available. On the rare occasion that I wear something which doesn't have pockets I really worry about having to put both my keys and my phone into my bag, especially when I'm in the car like my Mom was when her bag was stolen. (Someone broke the window and grabbed it off her lap.) Then again the crime rate in my country is probably a lot worse than it is where you live.

Yes I did and it cost me $200 to get a new car key made. Then later that day someone turned mine in at Publix.

@andriaperry That's a lot of money but it's always good to have a spare. A few years ago someone I know had his car stolen. The car was found, but not the key, which was some sort of computerised card or something. As far as I remember a replacement had to be ordered from another country, so he couldn't drive his car for a few weeks.

@andriaperry It's things like that which make me glad that my car is old and only needs an ordinary key. Sometimes excessive technology can make life really difficult.

@Gina145 Yes mine had to have the fob to run, I only had one so I had to get another made, so now I have two.

Yes, and it is terrible to not know who has your keys if they are missing! For me, these were returned quickly. Hope it does not happen again.

@PatZAnthony Mine were missing for nearly a day because I had a long drive to return to the place I lost them and I had an important appointment to take care of first. I hope it doesn't happen again... to either of us.

@Gina145 , yes, I dropped them in a friends car, and didn't realise, luckily when I got home the friend had dropped them off by my sister. It's a tummy clenching moment when you can't find your keys. Good you got yours back too.

@bluesa If you were going to lose them somewhere that was a good place to lose them. My biggest fear was that I might have been wrong about where I lost mine, and that I'd actually dropped them outside our house. That could have had serious consequences if they fell into the wrong hands.

I wrote a few months back about losing a set right here at home. We kept thinking they would turn up, but they have not. Maybe they fell in to the trash or something.

@JamesHxstatic I'm sorry to hear that yours never turned up. I'm really grateful that I had a good idea of where I was when I lost mine. My Mom had suggested I might have thrown them in the trash with something else but I knew that wasn't possible. Things like that are much more likely to happen at home.

Yes and it was a sinking horrible feeling. Once I put my things in the trunk of my car to go to school where I work. In the evening my father asked if I was missing anything and gave me the keys when I couldn't find it. He said a stranger found it in the road ...it must have gotten snag on my car trunk and fell out as I was reversing. I had all my other keys attached to it.

@Gita17112016 You were lucky that they were picked up by someone honest. I can't think of anything worse than losing my keys in front of my home where the wrong person might use them to rob me.

Oh my goodness, yes! I have locked them in my car, lost them, and misplaced them. Sometimes, I would even have to dig through my purse to find them. My parents tease me about it every time I tell them about it.

@Sunflower_Michele54 I misplace all sorts of things, but usually not my keys. However that didn't stop me digging through my purse looking for mine, even though I knew I hadn't put them there. When I'm desperate I'll try anything!
Misplacing things is one thing though. Having my house keys fall out of my pocket an hour away from home was much more frightening, especially when I discovered they were missing after the place I lost them had closed for the day.
