Money is losing its value. Grocery spendings keep escalating. With that in mind, I started to utilize the little space I had to start a frugal garden. I dug some soil from my backyard, toss in some organic trash, get seeds and cuttings from here and there, water them with collected rain water, and wait with crossed finger. We'll see how it goes.

One year I made it through my summer months spending very little on groceries. I was just eating produce from my garden and berries in the woods. You have to do what you can do.

'You have to do what you can do'
That sentence nails it.
So you tried it and spent less on groceries during summer?
I'll take that as an inspiration . I live where gardening can be done all year round. So if I do things right, I can reduce my spending. Thanks!

@shaqziad1610 Make sure to plant in rotation too, so you best utilize portions and what can produce. Certain plants only last for so long before they give in to old age. Even with a limited growing season here, I can still plant some things early and some things later.
I grow a garden every year. My asparagus bed will finally be mature enough to harvest this year, so I'm looking forward to it. Those plants take 3 years to grow before you can harvest them. So I got some 2-yr crowns and let them grow stronger for 2 years. It will be interesting to see what pops up this spring.

@OneOfMany You grow asparagus? Wow They are like, super hard to take care. I salute you.
I think I'm going to start with short-lived vegetables. Then I can rotate them like you suggested. It should keep the soil fertile, since I don't want to buy fertilizer. .

That's a very good idea. I started a small wall gardening. I put it on the laundry area where the sun shines brightly for 2 hours in the morning. I have few herbs like mint, rosemary and etc. I will try to grow some romaine lettuce on the wall soon too.

Vertical gardening! That's wonderful!
Lettuce is lovely. And you must have spend less on buying herbs all these years. I hope I can be like you.

@diosabella I think that's make two of us!
I never buy fertilizer myself. What I do, I make something like a compost. I collect vegetable scraps and eggshells from my kitchen, and kind of layered it with soil dug up from my backyard in a reused 5L cooking oil bottle. Then I forget them. In a month or so, you get a nutrient-enriched potting soil!

@shaqziad1610 I'm ornamental kind of gal. I have loads of flowering plants like orchids. But I want to try growing my own food because I really like salad and infused water. I hope it will be successful. Im trying to make my own fertilizer too for my herbal garden. I'm gonna eat it so using artificial fertilizer is a big no for me.

Backyard garden is a good back up and would help cut expenses, hope you can expand it later and make it self sustainable so dependence on things we need to buy would be lessend.

Thanks. I like your optimism.
For me, self sufficiency is like a miracle, but at least I have hope.

For now I had a pair of long beans and King's Salad. I just started a pot of pumpkin using the seed from store-bought pumpkin and it started sprouting, but I haven't transfer it yet.

Yeah, I'm looking around to find something easy and cheap to grow. I have some experience in growing plant, so I think I had a good start. Wish me luck!
