Donut or Doughnut?

I bought half-a-dozen 'doughnuts,' but Walmart's Bakery called them "Donuts." So I looked it up http://grammarist.com/spelling/doughnut-donut/ and--while they're both 'usable'--'doughnut' is literally more-correct (as it is "dough")!
But--tho the shape (I think it's a type of tool-appliance) and the word have been around for a while (and Walmart et. al. probably use it on labels to save ink)--Grammarist attributes its current popularity to Dunkin` Donuts.

Thanks for the info! Since both are correct I would prefer donut since it is shorter. :)

And now it's being used in the infamously named "Hurts Donut" https://www.bing.com/maps?osid=77eb3a4d-b56e-4511-bc98-cd4f4499fa37&cp=32.996547~-175.307336&lvl=3&v=2&sV=2&form=S00027
(Infamously named after the 'joke' where one person asks "Want a 'hurts donut'?" another person answers, "Yes, please!" then the first person punches the second in the shoulder and asks, "Hurts, don`it?" )

I learned I switch from doughnut and donut a lot. For some reason my computer doesn't think doughnut is an actual word haha!
