Religion The Basic Purpose

One thing is for sure that the person who introduced the concept of religion to the world had some positive intentions. There are many beliefs, many traditions and many rituals that have got associated to religion over the long course of human history. However, there have been highly contradicting views about the real purpose of religion. The most common views about religion like those about 'One God'; service to God being Best service; need for rites and rituals to be executed; and many more like these seem to be, more or less, meaningless. Religion is meant for welfare of human beings and these views do not contribute to the welfare at all. However, there are some religious views that contribute significantly in human welfare and can, truly, be called religious views, as far as the expectation from views that could be tagged so is concerned.
Religious beliefs demanding human beings to have empathy in their conduct are the beliefs that fulfil the expectations from religious beliefs. Religion is meant to ensure, as far as possible, harmonious co-existence of all living beings where none of them causes harm to another one.
So, one who wishes to be a good human being has to follow just one principle- his conduct should not cause harm, discomfort or displeasure to anyone. The famous statement that 'one should treat others as he wishes to be treated himself' lies at the base of the conduct of a good human being. Anyone who can imagine himself in the situation faced by the living being he is interacting with will be able to avoid behaving in an irresponsible manner and, thus, to inflict pain upon any living being. And this is the only identification of a good human being that his actions will not give pain to any living being.

Religions were definitely a control mechanism. It's a police system that regulates how we choose to believe and keeps people tamer for a greater authority to control. Why else would the Catholic Church have such a mountain of wealth? It was extracted from the people they were supposedly serving. I'm sure it was never beneficial in the long run.

@jesroash The smaller parts do, but the inner workings certainly do not! :D

Religion was certainly "something" that should never have been invented.

@stapllotik I honestly can not see anything positive about them. All I can see is segregation and alienation.
