It’s not often middle-schoolers get married in New Hampshire. But it’s still perfectly legal, after the Republican-led House killed a bill Thursday to raise the marriage age to 18.The rejection leaves intact a state law that lets girls get married as...

Turns out most states (if not all) @AbbyGreenhill will allow early marriage with parental consent.

@PatZAnthony Sorry, but it's still crazy and any parents who allow a 13 year old to marry need serious help. TN 16 or younger you need a court order, otherwise legal age is 18. I guess we aren't as backwards as some other states.

@workathomefan A thirteen year old should be enjoying their childhood.. Being a child. Not getting married.

New Hampshire is 13! Wow.
Not even sure what it is in our state but in our little circle, finishing college and few other important things would be first.
Poor females in NH.

@amadeo People don't get married b/c of pregnancy these days from what we see looking at the stats in most states.

I don't know, but I thought it was 16 here with parental consent (in PA) but haven't looked up the laws. It must be an arranged marriage to make a decision so involved at that age. Is it because of a religions sect that does that?

@amadeo I'm not surprised by it because of the middle ages, but it's a little strange that it's still happening in the states.

@OneOfMany The law allowing it was passed in 1907. According to the article I read, only 784 such marriages have been approved in the 110 years since.

Interesting! Ages change in different countries and even states with time. I would think 13 is too young.

That's interesting to know but that is too young. They should enjoy their teenage life first before taking marriage seriously

Here in NC both the man and woman have to be 18 to marry on their own, or 16 with the parents consent. It is astounding to me that NH allows 13 year old girls and 14 year old boys to marry with parental permission.
An article I read indicated the bill was voted down because it would not allow 17-year-olds to marry even with parental permission, even though they can enlist in the military with parental permission at that age.

@TheHorse If I understood the article correctly, for a 13-year-old to marry, she not only had to have parental permission, but court approval. The NH bill was voted down because it would not allow anyone under 18 to get married period, and some lawmakers felt that wasn't fair to 17-year-olds who enlisted with parental permission and wanted to get married so their girlfriend or boyfriend and possibly child could access military benefits.

Without parental consent 18; WITH parental consent 14 in the state of Texas. That's BS in my book @amadeo . 13 is unconscionable!!! Parents who give consent to any child under 18 should be horse-whipped. To me that is rape.

From the Utah state courts website: You must be at least 15 years old to be married in Utah. If you are over 18, you do not need consent to get married. If you are 16 or 17, you need signed consent from a parent or guardian, which must be given in person to the county clerk before a marriage license will be issued. Me thinks it's still waaaaay too young to be married, id rather my kids grow up a bit, get established in thier careers, then get married to whomever they want. Course, utah is king on screwy laws, so I dunno

@amadeo There are many old laws on the books of each city around the USA, but many aren't catered to or worried about any more. Maybe someone found that particular one and decided it needed changing even though most parent's wouldn't give their permission to anyone that young. That could be why it was voted down. Why change a law that no one uses to get their way. It's not like the thirteen year old would know where to look at the city offices to see what might work in their favor.
