It seems that I am more dependent on my mobile phone than I realised.

For many years now I have used my mobile for several things other than making calls. It is my camera and also an easy way to tell the time, especially since I no longer wear a watch.
This morning I took the mobile off charge and went out to Manchester. However, I was not aware that the battery was just about empty. I can only assume that I had not inserted the USB cable fully and the mobile had not actually been charging.
This should not have been a great problem since I had no reason to make any telephone calls, but it did prove quite inconvenient. Several times I forgot and automatically took out my mobile to check the time, only to remember that it was not working.
I was unable to time my arrival at the bus stop when returning home, but fortunately the bus did arrive soon after. It came as quite a surprise to me just how much I actually missed the mobile, despite only being out for around 3 hours.

Someone wrote a few days ago a post asking who still use something so useless as a wrist watch, I use one, now you know why. Not to mention that I do not need to open my bag, search for the phone, open the phone and check the time, a look at my wrist and I know the time.

I am only dependent on mine for calls... oh and messages and that's about it or is it? No wait, I use it as a camera too and as an appointments agenda and when I need the alarm and I think that's it. I stll use a watch though in the winter months. Not in the summer though or I get a white band on my arm where the sun never gets.

The only thing I really rely on my mobile for is waking me up in the morning and calling my hubby to meet me half way when I go grocery shopping alone since I need help with the groceries. We go on foot to the store as we have no car. Other than that I don't use it. It is just an old regular mobile phone.

There must have been so many around with mobiles that were fully charged. Would it have been ok for you to ask them what the time was?

I'm the same - my phone is my watch nowadays much more than a phone - though it hasn't got a camera - I prefer cameras for photos personally

@Asylum I still like watches and having town hall / church clocks around too - I find myself checking my phone to see if the times match up

I really do use mine for so many things, looking for directions, checking the time and of course the camera aspect. A very useful piece of equipment.

@BelleStarr Exactly, which makes it easier than carrying a camera.

I do not rely on my phone to remind me of the time. I can't be without my watch I live by the time!

@garymarsh6 You Southerners can afford to retire early, unlike us poverty stricken Northerners.

@Jeanniemaries I would need to buy a watch before I could do that.

@Asylum It comes as quite a shock we are terribly addicted. I think it would be a good exercise to spend a day away from the phone every once in awhile to remind is of how it used to be.

@Asylum I could do just fine myself without television or a microwave myself, just leave me my internet! Yes I agree there are lots of thing that become dependant on and a mobile phone is just one thing in a huge list of them but some better us as a society and some don't

I never realize how much I depend on my mobile until such time as I forget to grab it off my nightstand in the morning when I leave for work. I will find myself sitting at my desk at work reaching for my phone every few minutes, only to realize it's not there! I'll run home on my lunch break and grab it, but I'd hate to think of having to go an entire day without having it by my side!
