It seems that I am more dependent on my mobile phone than I realised.

For many years now I have used my mobile for several things other than making calls. It is my camera and also an easy way to tell the time, especially since I no longer wear a watch. This morning I took the mobile off charge and went out to Manchester. However, I was not aware that the battery was just about empty. I can only assume that I had not inserted the USB cable fully and the mobile had not actually been charging. This should not have been a great problem since I had no reason to make any telephone calls, but it did prove quite inconvenient. Several times I forgot and automatically took out my mobile to check the time, only to remember that it was not working. I was unable to time my arrival at the bus stop when returning home, but fortunately the bus did arrive soon after. It came as quite a surprise to me just how much I actually missed the mobile, despite only being out for around 3 hours.

Someone wrote a few days ago a post asking who still use something so useless as a wrist watch, I use one, now you know why. Not to mention that I do not need to open my bag, search for the phone, open the phone and check the time, a look at my wrist and I know the time.

Fortunately I do not have that problem because my mobile is kept in my shirt pocket and therefore easily accessible.

@Asylum Most of the time I have no pockets at all, I do not wear jeans or pants, usually I wear dresses and women dresses have no pockets.

There are many reasons for this slow, creeping dependence on the "smartphone" - you may have read my treatise elsewhere on it before, if not, here is a link to it...

Yes, the dependence does develop without our realisation.

@pgntwo In many ways since it develops gradually without us being aware.

I am only dependent on mine for calls... oh and messages and that's about it or is it? No wait, I use it as a camera too and as an appointments agenda and when I need the alarm and I think that's it. I stll use a watch though in the winter months. Not in the summer though or I get a white band on my arm where the sun never gets.

So you use your mobile for just about everything apart from cooking.

The only thing I really rely on my mobile for is waking me up in the morning and calling my hubby to meet me half way when I go grocery shopping alone since I need help with the groceries. We go on foot to the store as we have no car. Other than that I don't use it. It is just an old regular mobile phone.

There must have been so many around with mobiles that were fully charged. Would it have been ok for you to ask them what the time was?

I'm the same - my phone is my watch nowadays much more than a phone - though it hasn't got a camera - I prefer cameras for photos personally

I really do use mine for so many things, looking for directions, checking the time and of course the camera aspect. A very useful piece of equipment.

The time was imperative to me during my working days, but also was my mobile because I was constantly being telephoned by other sites.

It is easy to become dependent on something but not fully realise it until suddenly you're forced to cope without it.

Suddenly I was at a loss with no way of telling the time. In reality it made little difference what time it was, but we do tend to check fairly often.

@Asylum It comes as quite a shock we are terribly addicted. I think it would be a good exercise to spend a day away from the phone every once in awhile to remind is of how it used to be.

I think everyone is more dependant on their mobile phones now a days. I don't necessarily see it as a good thing though! The advancement in technology seems to change our priorities as a society but it is an addictive thing I think!

The same scenario applies to virtually everything these days. How inconvenient would it seem if w2e did not have a kettle and heated water in a pan all the time? Imagine not owning a television, or a microwave.

@Asylum I could do just fine myself without television or a microwave myself, just leave me my internet! Yes I agree there are lots of thing that become dependant on and a mobile phone is just one thing in a huge list of them but some better us as a society and some don't

I never realize how much I depend on my mobile until such time as I forget to grab it off my nightstand in the morning when I leave for work. I will find myself sitting at my desk at work reaching for my phone every few minutes, only to realize it's not there! I'll run home on my lunch break and grab it, but I'd hate to think of having to go an entire day without having it by my side!

I wear a watch all the time, and I still use a separate camera (albeit a digital one). I very rarely take my 'phone anywhere with me, in fact I only have one because my partner bought it for me!

Yes same here. I could forget my purse but i would never forget my smartphone. In addition to all that you said, my mobile phone is my outlet to boredom. I could read or play games while waiting. And time would just tick off.
