Bragging is a turn-off

"Brag" - as defined by merriam-webster.com:
a pompous or boastful statement
arrogant talk or manner : cockiness
I cannot say that in my 69 years on this earth that I have never bragged. I may brag about my new counter tops or how much I love my very intelligent dog (Ruby told me to say that). But you will never hear me bragging about how much money I have in the bank or how much money a relative makes. That is none of your business.
I was taught early on in life that financial matters are private matters. The details of ones 'wealth' are not things to put out there for the world to know about. The only people who know how much money we have are the people at the bank and my husband and even he isn't sure of the exact numbers.
Bragging about finances is not a turn on, it's a big turn off.

I fully agree with you. My parents told me since I was a little kid that you should never show off and talk about money. There is always people richer than you that will find your bragging inappropriate and ridiculous. Not to mention that talking about money is poor manner.

Extremely poor manners and I think those who do it should be ashamed.

@AbbyGreenhill I agree, we were discussing this right this morning with a friend. Talking about how many cars you have or how much you make and you can spend in silly thing is really poor manners. Those who do this, should stop and think for a moment to those one who struggle to have their bills paid at the end of the month. Shame on them.

@LadyDuck Yes, you are absolutely correct. Sometimes I wonder if those who brag so much really have all they say - and I wonder if they are really happy.

I know quite a few people who flaunt the fact that they have more financial security than others. But, the one thing I know is that money can't buy happiness or health. I am happy with what we have, although I sometimes wish we had more. But, the more you have the more you have to work to keep it.

I think the ones who brag about their money are not happy people.

I totally agree. There's a fine line between counting your blessings and counting your money.

Right, and counting your money in public is a no-no.

@JudyEv - you're right about it being a cultural thing. I was shocked how questions like "how much money do you make?" or "what's your salary?" were always thrown around in conversations casually among people who had just met. I heard that a lot when I lived in Jakarta - and each time I felt like saying "what is it to you?" or "that's none of your business!"

If I have a dollar or two million it's private. If I had enough money to brag about I wouldn't be spending time here LOL!

Agree. Even one's salary should be kept confidential. Never ever talk about money you have openly. Others brag about so many things like the degree they got, family's wealth, position in the company etc. Apt to share a quote I read before "Let your success do the talking."

Exactly - and those who brag so much makes you wonder if the success is true or not.

I don't have money to brag about really, but, I hate to say it, if I won some large amount in a contest or something, I'm sure I would come in here and write about it!
That probably isn't really the type of bragging you are referring to though.
My husband loves to brag to people about how he makes such good money.......so much that he never pays anything on time etc etc.

it's also frustrating, some ppl work really hard and get ahead, some work really hard and have things happen and dont, some ppl dont work, it's just not nice to brag (aside from as you said, a new small thing, or a cool thing a pet did)

Income....how much money someone is receiving...non of my business and I don't really care. Name dropping is also on that list. I commented on one such post. My comment was not intended to be a compliment, but the recipient read it as praise.

Some brag about what they have got when it's all due to an inheritance or lottery win, etc. In those cases it is hardly an achievement. As for those who have made it themsleves and want others to 'See what they have done', well, sometimes there is a problem.with the things they HAVEN'T done along the way. They may have neglected family, charities, etc.

That's very true. People often ask me how my husband and I quit work at 53/57 - I tell them how we did it - hard work and paying off all debt. That's about all I discuss abut money.

I think so too.
But owning the rentals I get a lot of "you`re rich!" But that is not the case and I will set them straight. I do believe that is why some people destroy the houses when they leave, jealousy.
It is not anyone`s business how much anyone has or owns.
But I cannot say that I have not bragged before, especially to the ones that said I would never amount to anything.

I have not seen you spouting off how rich you are so I don't think you talking about bragging that you did well is not bragging...if that makes sense.
We live in a very poor county and when we try to hire someone to do work and they come here the first time many say - wow, you have money. We usually don't hire them as I feel that they would rip us off price-wise.

I agree. Sometimes I have trouble determining what is talking about good things in my life, and what is bragging. I agree, finances are private. A wise woman once said that "those who brag, usually don't have what it is they boast of"... I have found it usually proves true.
