We are at #4 in my Favorite Bands You Might Not Know series, and that slot belongs to Bowery Electric. Comprised of composer and musician Lawrence Chandler and the sweet, whispery vocals of Martha Schwendener, Bowery Electric formed in the East Village of New York City in 1993, when they were both working at Andy Warhol's Interview Magazine. Over seven years, they released three albums and an EP, over the course of which they morphed from a droning, distorted shoegazer band into a chilled out trip hop act, and once even appeared on the BBC Radio 1 John Peel Show (and if John Peel liked you, you had something good going. That man was an astute judge of musical talent.) Chandler can build a song with the best of them, running each note through a laptop, sampling and manipulating his own stuff, and the duo is often credited as being one of the first bands to utilize that technology onstage alongside live instruments. That the attached electronic chill out tune is nearly eight minutes long without getting boring is a testament to Chandler's skill. Don't let the length deter you from enjoying it! (Info verified by Wikipedia)
The perfected ending evolution of Martha and Lawrence's sound. Multi-genre perfection, the duo's best. "Lushlife" by Bowery Electric. From the 1999 "Lushlife...

I never got to listen to him, obviously. I just know his reputation and owned quite a few Peel Sessions over the years.

@Ronrybs - I still might try to look for them, just to be able to say I've listened a few times.

@teamfreak16 When I used to work the late shifts, I'd listen. I am sure you can find his old shows online, of course they'd be a little dated now

They have good progression in this song. Sounds like they are adding on as they go along.

He was pretty good at that. This is a 180° departure from their first album:

Yes, she does have a good voice. I would imagine that the problem is that there's very little audience for cross-genre music, especially when you have jazz elements. There's an old joke about how to make a million dollars as a jazz musician: start with two million. Thanks for sharing.

And that's perfectly alright. Lot's of people have interests other than music. As long as you're interested in something is all that matters.

No hits. They were just an indie band on an indie label.
