No, I am not talking about a bunch of Nuns.
The Single Sister's house was constructed to house Old Salem's unmarried women. Of course then it wasn't called "Old Salem" but simply "Salem."
I won't get into that or we will be here all day. ("Salem" combined with "Winston" to form "Winston Salem" and that's all you need to know)
The Single Sisters tasked themselves with many jobs to earn money. They were required to pay for room and board, and needed the money for other personal needs as well. They later formed a boarding school for girls only.
I will share only one link, but invite you to look up more about Old Salem via google. Old Salem, North Carolina will give you links to their webpages. I'm currently looking through their tumblr blog, enjoying a few diary entries that they've scrounged up from the old Community.

You know, I might actually see if there is a website like this for the counties my grandparents grew up in. I know that they would appreciate a printed copy of a photograph of the areas they would have tromped along in.

I am thinking of getting a print of this. It's $10.00 to get an 8x10 that you have to print yourself, but $30.00 to get an 8x10 that they print for you. I might have to go for the $30.00 one because our printer doesn't work.

I didn't much appreciate the history of the place when I was made to tour it for school. Now I can't get enough of it.

I am sure there are plenty such places still in operation today. This one isn't, and hasn't been for two centuries.

You can visit this place, though I think the majority of it is now in use by the college.

There was.
This was in the 1700's in a Moravian community here where I live.
There was a home for the single men and one for the single women.

@Yadah04 Not in the same way it was back then. It is part of a community. A lot of schools tour the place. I remember doing so a lot when I was a child. The link I provide tells you more about the place.

How did they avoid 'the shameful image' one pins to ... such ... houses?

That was a very old photo. Though I am pretty sure work has been done to it since it was erected.

@teamfreak16 I want to go back to this place in the Spring. When I do, I'll be sure to take photographs and post about them here.
