What if there is a free intranet facility by government ?

March 14, 2017 10:16am CST
I was wondering intranet is a great way to connect within as enterprise, So what if government having an official server provide countrywide intranet facility. By doing so government will easily connect to people, they can use it for voting purposes. and Individuals will be able to communicate each other free of cost. Share your thoughts is it possible or not ?

It is certainly possible but I expect the big internet service providers would object. Over here many places give free internet such as schools, libraries and many hotels bars and cafes do too. Edit...I misread and thought you meant internet not intranet. A free government intranet may be good but they'd still have to pay ISPs to use their cables or building a new system would cost billions and not be cost effective. I'd say no to free government intranet as nothing is really free...we'd pay somewhere along the line.

It would not affect free WiFi providers.

@Asylum no but totally free internet would put thousands out of work and knock billions off the stock market.

An intranet is a closed system, so you cannot connect with the outside world except via email.

@Mike197602 A free internet would be far more practical, but still very expensive due to the telephone systems used.

@Asylum Yes internet would be far more practical as compared to intranet, but expensive as well.

That would be nice. Probably would raise our taxes quite a sum though!

Why a government would need to hide its communication to the rest of the world ? I would see that as a bad sign for freedom and future of internet in this country.

The idea is only for the nationwide communication network.

Anything the government is in charge of turns to doo-doo. Remember the insurance website run by the government?
