Might be a good thing to have to go through for a couple of days as a child. Reality check.

I think it would depend on who was living it with me. We have to think that many of the people on mylot may live that way all of the time, and that it is nothing unusual. Would I like to do it, permanently, "No", could I if I had to, I think "Yes"

No I would not. There are the old order Amish who shun all modern conveniances but there are also variations in Amish people. Some use motors, tractors and cars but the rest of their life is pretty simplistic. They do not believe in education either, just to Grade 8 then the children are taken out to work on the land. I wonder if their life is really more peaceful. Certainly it cannot be simple with all the hard work they have to do.

It may be simple, as in the dealings of everyday trials, but I cannot imagine that the hard work would be something to take lightly. I think they have their hands full.

No, they are far too simplistic and I am too adjusted to modern life with technology.

I don't mind when I have to live without electricity for a few days, but to live that way every day takes a lot of patience and planning. The town next to where I live is predominently Amish in population. It's the second biggest Amish community in Ohio. Over the years I've had many Amish friends, and been privileged to be in their houses many times. I know most people think of the Amish as living without electricity and their housing must be poor quality, but I have to say they're some of the finest craftsmen (and women) I've ever met. Their homes are beautiful inside, and lots of their furniture has been finely made and crafted by them. Some of it puts purchased furniture to shame!!
I'm a farmer, and used to have a lot of dealings with them in regards to farming and cattle, etc. Lots of the equipment they use is the same type of equipment that we use to pull behind our tractors, except theirs is used re-configured to be pulled behind their draft horses. Ours used to be a dairy farm, and I appreciated the fact that we had electric milking machines to do our work with...for them, they still do it all by hand, but there are more of them in their families to do the work.
While they don't have phones in their houses, usually there is a public phone down the street, even in the country where there aren't any 'yanks' (what they call US.) Since the shooting of all the little Amish girls (this summer) they will be permitted to keep donated cell phones that will only dial 911, on the premises of their schools for safety's sake.
They do this all in the name of their religious beliefs. When kids reach a certain age, they are allowed to go into the world and live as others for a while until they decide to truly adopt and follow their religious beliefs. I have to laugh sometimes when I see an Amish buggy zipping down the road w

You don't live real far from me. We go to the Amish country about once a year. We take some of the back roads along with going to the tourist areas so that my son can see some of the ways that they farm and do chores. It is such an eye opener.

Well Were we live there is a lot of amish here. They all get together to cook. If something happen they all come together. Just like they did in the old days. But I couldn't live without power, running water, wearing a dress all the time. No way, not me.

I do love the closeness they have with their community, but living without all the modern things does not interest me.

No way! I could never do it. We had no power after a snowstorm here in October for 5 days and I thought that I would die of boredom. No TV, no radio, no computer, no lights to read by, no heat, no electric stove. The treadmill wouldn't even work, because that's electric too! It's unbelievable how dependent we are on electricity, but I sure was glad to have it come back on.

- Sometimes, I think I would. And sometimes I wish I lived back when everyone lived like that. There were lots of dangers though.. So many women dying at a child's birth.. and people dying young.. But the lifestyle! I think I'd like it! But just a small place not so awful hard to keep a little warm in the winter.. Just think though too, having to grow so much of your own food.. I hate cars.. hate grocery stores, but I guess they have their advantages..! I do like to try to live a simple life. Not easy what with all the bills life has.

I love the simplicity of the Amish. I am not afraid of the hard work that they do. I need the electricity need to run things that they don't believe in. I do believe in modern conveniences that they don't.

First I would have to be a Christian, and I am not. Then I would have to be a wife and mother , and I would hate that. And then living without electicity or t.v. or movies. I don't think so.
