MyLot Terms of Use Agreement

Have you read the Terms of Use Agreement for myLot? It might be a good idea to at least glance at it and see if you are breaking any rules. Here is an example of a section that I think is being ignored. I have 'copied' this from the myLot site.
Copyright Policy. You may not post, modify, distribute, or reproduce in any way any copyrighted material, trademarks, or other proprietary information belonging to others without obtaining the prior written consent of the owner of such proprietary rights.
I think most people understand that means you can't copy an article from a newspaper or other source. But it also includes photos. If you 'borrow' a photo from a news story or other sources without the authorization of the person that photo belong to, then you are going against myLot's copyright policy.
In order to not get into a situation like that you can put a link to the article so that if someone wants to they can see the photo - but legally you cannot use the photo without permission.
The best way to avoid a situation like this is to use your own photos or Pixabay. Maybe @GoAskAlice can add to this, clarify it or let me know if I am wrong.
Photo is from Pixabay

It's not straight forward thing usually. There is also something called "fair use", that makes exceptions in the laws regarding copyrights.
Toggle navigation More Information on Fair Use Fair use is a legal doctrine that promotes freedom of expression by permitting the unlicensed use of copyright-protected works in certain circumstances. Section 107 of the Copyright Act provides the statutor

That would require someone with a little legal experience to translate LOL!
One more thing - someone wrote that myLot states that we have to state our sources for photos. I have done that since my early days writing online so not a big deal I always do...but I have searched the site and don't see where that is noted, if it is. If so, where is that?

@AbbyGreenhill Even public domain photos can be tricky. Sometimes, people sneak copyrighted ones in there just to be mean. Make sure any photo you use is really public domain. If there is a name attached, be sure to give attribution.

@JolietJake I read a post by someone recently that said the opposite of that I knew it wasn't right since I read thru the entire help section looking for that info while getting this post ready.

@akalinus Some topics on Pixabay have hundreds of photos - sometimes I get tired scrolling thru them all.

Well you are a one of a kind - well, maybe a dozen of a kind...I do the same thing...and I like to go back and check for things if/when I see something that doesn't seem quite right.

For the most part, I try to use my own photos or if I don't - I link the photos. I do prefer my own photos though.

There are also thousands of public domain photos out there that can be used for any reason by anyone.

Yes there are but I don't think people 'think' they are stealing if they use ones that aren't public domain.

@AbbyGreenhill Yup I'm sure you are right. Mostly I use my own but there are times I don't have the appropriate pic for my discussion. I usually try Pixabay first but there are times they don't have what I want either.

I use my own photos. Either it is with @thellyscucina or @thelme55 written on a photo.

There is watermark software that you can buy. I don't know much about it but want to look into it. I don't have a scanner so I take photos with my phone and crop them or sometimes an old digital camera. I should haul that thing out of hiding and use it, too.

WHAT????? Read the rules?????
I am amused by the people who violate the terms of service, then when they're called on it say, "Oh, I'm new here, I don't know how this works." Reading the rules before they signed up never entered into their minds?!
I would add, as I see this occasionally in the Music area, copying the lyrics of an entire song is also copyright infringement. You're always allowed to quote a line or two as an example or to comment on it, but posting the entire lyrics to "Stairway to Heaven" is a no-no.

I don't think I've seen anyone copy song lyrics word for word if they did I would report it. No, we don't have to read the rules...we're extremely intelligent LOL!

@AbbyGreenhill It is a drawing of a giraffe mom and baby. The Silhouette section of Pixabay Public Domain Images is good for images, too. I have used them several times.

I always use my own photo. That's why whenever I am out of the house I always take a picture of this and that for future use.
If not , I will get from Pixabay. Do you know of other sites please where we can freely get pictures?

I learned about that a long time ago. I only write my own material. It's all I know to do, actually. As for pictures, if I don't use Pixabay or my own, I just let it go. Lately, I haven't felt like using pictures at all. I just let my words speak for themselves.
