An Oppossum Out in the Middle of the Day?

On my afternoon walk the dog found itself a rare daytime sight and my mother and I quickly called it back. The slow, lumbering animal we initially thought to be a porcupine looked at us with its white head, and we knew that it was an opossum instead, but out in the day?! We thought the typical 'nocturnal animal = has rabies' approach, and still got the dog away. But the animal didn't look sick, or like it was doing anything other than walking around at 2 in the afternoon.
So thinking about it, I got on the internet and searched for why this animal would be in the middle of the day, and here is what I learned:
Opossums are naturally resistant to the rabies virus because of an extremely low body temperature atypical in mammals. This temperature makes the virus unable to survive in the opossum's system and it's generally wondered if the animal can even contract the virus. So no rabies worries!
Opossums will hiss and drool when it encounters a threat, thus making it appear sick. It is in fact healthy and that's just what it does. If that doesn't work, it will fall over and... play 'possum...
Opossums are easily frightened and it will take a long time to get them out of a tree. If they are scared by a dog or a coyote or the like, they may not get the nerve to leave the tree until the day time, and slowly work their way back to their den. So this one was probably shaking in a tree through the night, because we have coyotes around.
So that's why my daytime opossum was outside when it shouldn't have been, and because it is awesome and eats ticks, it helps prevent the spread of Lyme disease. So go opossum! I'm glad the dog decided to listen and not hurt it.

@OneOfMany Why would someone want to do that to an opossum? Aren't they rodents, related to weasels?

@pgntwo They are marsupials. Obviously he was trashed. No one in their right mind would try that. Plus, opossums are ugly critters!

Cool information, when I was a kid they would come up on to our porch and climb into the bird feeders, with their babies, I have never seen one in the wild, but if I saw one in the daytime, i would have done just what you did... good to know they don't get rabies.

@PainsOnSlate It would be neat to see one with a bunch of babies clinging to it.

I'd say your porch was 'one in the wild'. Just because it was your house, it doesn't mean that it wasn't a wild animal. Just like wild birds. How often do you see all the different species that you'd see gathered around the feeder? I rarely see hummingbirds in the wild (although the ones that do appear make themselves known by hovering in front of me) but I will see a lot more when I feed them. The biggest hummingbird tore the feeder down - no wait... that was a black bear... never-mind!

@OneOfMany I lived in the country on several hundred acres of wild, my mother had climbing flowers on the porch and the opossums would show up with the babies, climb the lattice and enjoy a feed, we would turn off the lights inside and watch them from the door.. We had motion light outside.

@OneOfMany Yeah, dogs seem not to know better and very sad when they get shot in the face with all those needles. That is why I would be scared to even pet one, zoo or not. You are a braver man than me. lol

@crossbones27 Well the quills are just modified hair, so they really can't be shot, just detach quite easily from a tail flick. We had a dog die from swallowing the needles from a baby porcupine. It was a grisly ending. We should have put her down, but we didn't know how bad it was. It was the dog's 3rd or 4th time getting stuck with quills. Apparently they smell really good, which is why dogs go for them. I guess people used to eat them often in the past too.

If the dog hadn't found it, I doubt I would have seen it. I see them at night from time to time, but this one was much bigger than the ones I usually.
A few years ago I saw a porcupine in the same area, which is why I got nervous. Porcupines aren't a threat if left alone, but a dog never leaves them alone. The porky I saw back then walked right in front of me. They are awfully cute. I even pet one once at a zoo - very carefully!

@OneOfMany Thanks - I saw a picture, but it didn't really give me an idea of its size.

@jaboUK It's like the hedgehog. If you didn't know they were tiny, you'd think that they are a lot bigger! I used to, but then I saw pictures of them on someone's hand.

Like the size of a really big house cat. Although I don't know how big the biggest ones are. A little larger.

It was big, so I was wondering if it wasn't a mother. They breed in February, so her pouch could have been full of little ones.

I've seen them after dusk before but never in the daylight hours either. Oddly enough, I've always called them possums, but my husband labeled them as you have here. We argued until he goggle it. Seems they go by both names in different regions or something like that.
I never saw them growing up, so I'm a bit surprised that the time I did see one on the road that I even knew what it was.

@OneOfMany Just so they stay out there. We had an unexpected visitor last year into our living room. Something scurrying about. I put some barricades up so it couldn't go into the bedrooms and found it was a chipmunk. Our screen door doesn't shut right away and it must have snuck in when we weren't paying attention. Thankfully, I noticed it before it got into any of our clothes or things.

@OneOfMany The one I saw over ten years ago was waddling down the center of a road in a neighborhood. It took me a bit to figure out what kind of animal it was it was so fat. That's the only one I've ever seen, I think.

I would have never guessed you could see these during the day, and thought they would stay hidden. Wonder if the one you saw has been eating some Pet food left out somewhere so is not afraid to be out and about during the day?

I doubt there was any pet food out in the middle of the field it was walking in. It was completely the middle of a big hay field. The closest house only had horses, and the next closest house is only used in the summer. There was nowhere that it would be coming from, and it was really far out in the open.

Even night time critters like a day walk every now and then. Suddenly I want more opossums in the woods though, now that I know they eat ticks.

Maybe it had an important mission to accomplish? You know that expression "Don't poke the bear"-same for the opossum. Just leave it alone.

Well that's why we left it alone. I like letting animals do their thing. I was on a walk several years ago and a porcupine walked next to me and then crossed in front of me. We were both enjoying the warm spring day. I wasn't bugging it, and it knew that I was not a threat.
I'm like that around skunks too. They are completely not afraid of me being near them at all. But then, animals like me. So maybe that's part of the reason.

I have no idea what these even look like! I saw a Kestral the other day, but that's not very exciting.

Ugly little things with pointy teeth and a long, bald tail. Although I'm sure they look cute enough when they are all fluffy. Here's a commercial with one:

I have seen a Momma possum with babies riding her back one day when I was living in Florida. It was during the morning hours and was quite a sight to see.

I'm sure. I would like to see that too, but I haven't seen all that many opossums to begin with!
