Swimming in the shallows

I learnt to swim pretty late in life but could not go beyond the pool meant for kids. Talking about swimming in the shallows we have birds coming for a swim specially those tiny birds who will only swim in the shallows. We have a tapered bath. Wonder how these baby birds know that it is dangerous to go into the deep. These birds normally come in a group and enjoy their swim together. What is your swimming story?

Birds are entertaining to watch. In another couple of weeks it will be time to put the birdbath outside. For the moment we just watch them at the feeders.

Our birdbath is fixed in the garden and we see these birds throughout the year.

@allknowing we put it away for the winter. The ice would destroy it.

I remember going to a lake with my grandmother and I learn how to swim there when I was very little. I don't like to go to swim anymore but I'm not bad at it

Do you have your own swimming pool. Do you dive as well?

@allknowing no I do not have a swimming pool. I learned at my uncles apartment complex swimming pool. My mom wouldn't allow a pool in the yard she said it's too much maintenance required. I jump in the pool, but not high enough to dive like the Olympics

In our province, we used to swim in the river since I was in my primary school. But when my family decided to stay in the city, I rarely swim. Maybe once a year during summer.

I'm not a good swimmer but I do love hanging out by the pool or by the beach.

My parents had their summer vacations at the beach since they were married, so I can't remember exactly when I learned swimming but I was very little when they teached me.

I took swimming lessons early on in life, but was never fully comfortable with swimming the way we were taught. I can tread water fairly well and used to be able to float for hours on end. I don't bother much with swimming in recent years even though I still keep two swimsuits about just in case.

I enjoy swimming although I am not a very fast or strong swimmer, but I can do it slowly for a long time! My favourite is to swim outdoors.

When you say outdoors does it mean the sea?

@allknowing Not necessarily, I don't often swim in the sea around the UK as it's too cold but I do sometimes swim in the river and I prefer outdoor pools to indoor ones.

When I was little we had a public pool very close to our house. I was a quick learner, and did lessons there, so since everybody knew us the life guards would allow my brothers to be my "adult" guardians, even though the oldest was only 12 when we moved. As far as my parents knew everything was okay when the guys took me swimming. If I told them about their game I wouldn't get to go swimming when mum & dad were too busy to go. I always had to stay with my brothers at the pool, and they were much better swimmers than me at that time. We would go deeper than my swim class was allowed, and they would play, "How long can Carly hold her breath?" It wouldn't have been so bad if there weren't two of them, not because I was outmatched in strength, but because it would usually turn into an argument while I was still under water. The oldest would want to let me up, and the middle hellion would argue that I was getting better and better every time, and this way it would take a lot for me to drown if something "really" happened. I could hear them yelling at each other because usually my head was only maybe a half a foot to a foot under the surface. A few years later at our next house we got a pool, and now that I think back, I'm surprised I still enjoyed swimming so much. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, brothers included.

You had great brothers and they are the reason why you have become a great swimmer
