Being polite and kind in Rhode Island

People are often startled by it up here, whereas it's the norm down where I'm from in North Carolina. When I lived in RI before, I was frequently asked if I was being sarcastic when I was simply being polite. Having added a quantity of white hairs upon my haidbone, now people seem to figure I'm a bit addled and aren't so quick to be defensive. The thing is, being polite and kind costs nothing. I was raised, by example, to be polite. Heck, when you're a minister's kid, it's a requirement! Kindness was something I made a constant practice of in response to people being unkind to me. I never want anyone to feel less than around me. Therefore, I make sure I really focus on whomever I'm talking with. I look them in the eyes. I smile. I take care to listen and respond appropriately. Now I'm not perfect, so I do have my impatient moments, but they are not as frequent as they were when I was younger. I smile at strangers. I compliment people's attire. I hold doors for folks. I have even been known to hold a leash or two while a pet parent ran in for coffee. Being polite costs nothing. You don't lose face by saying, "Please," "Thank you," or "Pardon me." And the coolest thing about being polite and kind? It's contagious.

My daughter visits Rhode Island periodically and has said that the folks up there are kind of no-nonsense all business types and polite small talk during a transaction seems odd to them.

True in my experience. I do enjoy disarming them, I admit.

Child, WalMart can be Hell on Earth anywhere. I made the mistake of going on Dec. 23 and boy did I regret it!

I remember when I first moved to the South from NY. I felt like I was on another planet! Lol. I never really fit in up North because I always tried to follow the same as you-being polite and kind. I was looked at strangely and people just thought I was weird. Oh well, I would rather be nice-makes me feel good and the other person too. =)

Precisely! Telling someone who's having a humdrum day that you like their outfit or shoes or that their sense of color is wonderful can make all the difference.

I agree. However I am British and people stereotype us for our politeness.
