Would you be diabetic for a day?

We've now booked our plane tickets to go to Ireland in May. From Western Australia, we'll be in the air for just over 19 hours. It doesn't seem so long if you say it quick. I think we stopover in Dubai for a couple of hours.
We now have a house-sitter although he has yet to be given detailed instructions as to the care of Herc, our pet sheep. As part of the booking process, you are asked if you want special meals. This might be vegetarian, halal, kosher, gluten-free or diabetic. There might be others. I'm not sure.
Vince doesn't need diabetic meals although he is Type 2 diabetic. One plane trip eating 'regular' meals isn't going to do any harm. However our son said he often opts for vegetarian as it's always a nice meal and – you get served before the rest of the plane. Which seems to be important to him!
So the last few trips Vince has booked a diabetic meal and in general they haven't been much different to my mainstream meal. He might get an apple instead of a sweet biscuit. I was tempted to be diabetic too for my plane trip but decided against it. I'd hate to miss out on ice-cream. Would you be tempted to go diabetic to get an earlier meal?
The photo is a bridge in Ireland - one of the many lovely stone bridges we saw.

If you're going to western Ireland maybe visit Achill Island...that's where I have a lot of family

@Mike197602 Everywhere in Ireland is a great place to visit! The coast west of Dingle is spectacular too.

I used to order a fruit plate which I loved and yes I get served early. I am not sure if they still offer those. I would order whatever tastes best but of course with the regular meals there is no guarantee what you prefer will be left when they get to you.

I am type 2 diabetic, but I would not look for the different meal unless it really appealed to me. I try to always have protein snacks with me where ever I go.

What a great trip that would be. Airline food is not generally very good, but I would take my chances with the regular meal.

@JudyEv I suppose we get jaded, but it would be a surprise to get a good meal on an airplane.

Today is the first really sunny day we've had - maybe 20C which isn't hot by our standards but everyone is out in shorts and T-shirts.

What a long flight, I hope you will have some fun on the plane. Actually I don't know that there are diabetic meals in the plane. I think this is a very considerate offer because the diabetic really shall pay attention to their diet. It is nothing wrong to be strict on it.

wow a 19 hour flight!!! Is that non stop?? I didn't know jets could carry that much fuel. I thought the 11 1/2 hour trip from Seattle to Bejing they were discussing on TV sounded like alot. I once had a 10 hour flight to Hawaii from Dallas. The longest flight I had before that was 6 hours to Alaska..but that involved a flight transfer in Dallas. No, that isn't right now I remember the flight to London from DC was around 12 hours.

The 19 hours is in two hops. A two-hour stopover in Dubai on the way.

I've never been on a plane or eaten airline food.. so I don't know. I might select vegetarian only because I am picky when it comes to meat. I basically only eat white meat chicken.

@JudyEv It's so easy to mess up meat.. it can be too tough, or too rare.. and dangerous if not cooked right!

@katsmeow1213 That's true but there is usually a choice of at least two dishes.

What a beautiful photo and I'd love to be standing on it enjoying the view. I probably would be tempted to ask for a diabetic meal if I was traveling that far

It doesn't really worry me when I get my meal although I have heard of times when they have run out.

My main issue is with some of the foods that are often offered to people who are Diabetic. Many times these are foods I have issues with eating. Like I have no teeth so an apple would be impossible. For this many hrs on a flight, I hope you are fed more than once. That is one of the reasons I have never considered over seas anywhere as flying even 4 to 5 hrs around here from West Coast to wherever is long enough.

Sometimes it seems they never stop trying to feed you. :) But certainly it is long trip.

Even if I am the last one to be served I would still opt for non diabetic meal. Will there be ice cream
May is still two months away but you need to already draw up your checklist. Your house sitter should be there atleast a week prior I suppose.

I think I don't like the diabetic meal because I love sweets. 19 hours in the plane? That's too long. I'm very nervous when I'm flying two hours is enough for me

Yes, it is a long time. It will be broken with a couple of hours in Dubai but it's not long enough to do anything much.

If you keep eating loads of junk food, you just might become diabetic.
