Joan, part of it had to do with the fact that many US voters were sick of the same old thing.
Donald Trump is different. His style is unorthodox compared to others who were running for President.
Even if you don't like Trump, you have to admit that he is different (for better or for worse).

He lost the majority vote but won under the electoral college system.
So he won because of the system.
In some ways I'd say Hilary lost rather than Trump won...if you get my meaning.

@joanreyes00 I'd say so.
If the majority of votes go to one person but another person wins that's a problem.
