Replacing a window air conditioner isn't as easy as it may seem.

I had to do some board replacements. The bottom board, aka the window sill, and the lower board under it called the window skirt, both were in bad states, and had to be removed, caulked in the cracks where there had been none before and I had to go to Lowe's and Home Depot to buy new boards. How utterly tiresome! Then I had to measure, saw, use a leveler and since I could not find my drill, I had to use an electric screwdriver to mount the two boards. Then after a few days I had to remove both of them because they were in the wrong location to mount the window unit. Because the window slides up and down and just an inch or so below the bottom of the lower window frame, I had to place a new window sill board so it would meet exactly at the edge of the bottom of the lower window frame so it would be above the bottom outside base frame board where the window unit rests. There were so many things I had to buy I must have spent half of what it would have cost to have a window expert do the work. But I did do it myself and for that I am proud. It don't look that great but I think it may hold the new 12,000 BTU 115 Volt Frigidaire quiet and HEPA filter unit. We also purchased Window A/C bracket to support the weight of the window unit so it won't put too much weight on the window. This is all so difficult to do. If I were a rich man, I would have just called The Home Depot and asked 'PLEASE , can you install our new window box air conditioner?" I did however, save over 100.00 dollars by doing it myself. And I ain't no carpenter by a long shot.

If I ever decide to get another contractor I know it will likely not be referrenced through Home Advisor. They send anybody they have on a list and some of them are just plain rude and not too good at their so called craft. Back in the day, my sister's father-in-law was the type who took great care in his ability to fix and repair things. He had excellent carpentry skills that were more common in his generation than mine.

I've done this! I still can't believe it's been over twenty years since I did. Thank goodness I inherited some mechanical and crafty acumen from my paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother! I hope you've given yourself a nice reward for a job well done.

Ours was already here when we moved here. I know nothing about window air units.

I know it's a good idea to have it serviced once a year by a pro. The thing is, they get dirty and that dirt can prevent the unit from working properly due to dust and dirt accumulating.

I still need help lifting the unit. I have a herniated abdomen, for life. I am not supposed to lift anything over 20 to 25 pounds, but most of my jobs required lifting upwards of 80 pounds in spite of my limitations. I guess I can get someone to help me over the next few weeks only the person I have in mind works even though he is already retired. He is the only reliable person I actually know besides another friend who lives too far away from us.

You are a lucky person. I guess the temperatures where you are living at this time, are more moderate. I understand London is known for it's London Fog,

Thank you. I am in the process of caulking all the wood and doing a double paint job on both outside the window and inside before attempting the final steps and I still will need some help lifting it. I have a friend who will help me with lifting it when he finally gets a day off his work.

For someone without the proper skill to finally did it, you should reward yourself getting it done. Good job

Thanks, I think I will warm up that Starbucks coffee and go offline a while and watch some kind of movie before calling it a day. It's been one of those days.

We have not had a window air conditioner in years since we have a whole house air conditioner.
