Two sad stories about mystery trips

Mystery flights and voyages seem to be quite popular. As far as sea voyages go, Western Australia is at a bit of a disadvantage as there is nowhere close to go to in just a few days. Mostly the ships sail northwards up the coast for half the journey then sail home again. Some go far enough from the coast to be able to legally operate the on-board casino. One of our acquaintances was on a mystery sea voyage when the weather turned bad and the ship sheltered in Eagle Bay for two days. From the deck, our friend could see his house so he was less than thrilled. The other story involves a mystery flight. A guy drove to Perth from Kalgoorlie (almost 600 kms) to take a mystery flight. Like our friend on the ship, he was also less than thrilled with his mystery tour as the flight took him back to Kalgoorlie. He decided to surprise his wife by spending the allotted time at home. She was certainly surprised as he found her in a compromising position with his best mate. I can imagine that his thoughts on the flight home were somewhat different to his thoughts on the outward journey. The photo is of a typical goldfields sunset.

They don't appeal to me much either. There is nowhere close to us that is particularly attractive in the time that's available.

The first one is quite funny and even though the next one started out that way. It sure wasn't funny the way it ended. I wonder who was more surprised.

The second one was really sad I thought. I wonder what excuse the wife had not to go on the trip. The husband had to fly back to Perth then drive back to Kal. When he got there, the wife had disappeared.

No mystery there - nothing but disappointments. And that discovery must have spoilt that man's life forever.

@allknowing , Very true not a happy ending of the husband's gut to chose that mystery trip just to reach home so timely.

@marguicha I can't imagine why the second guy went on his own. Maybe his wife made up an excuse so she could stay home.

Do people book these mystery trips not knowing the destination? (Forgive me, we don't travel much so don't know about these things ). How unfortunate about both trips you mentioned . . . but the second one, oh my, that became a different mystery!

@JudyEv - That is a hilarious story about the man who returned back to Kalgoorlie, only to find his wife with his best friend. Oooh! That was definitely not a good outcome for his Mystery Trip!

@JudyEv - It is similar to a story we were told by a guide, the first time we toured Catalina Island. There is a lovely home there on a cliff overlooking the ocean. The story goes that a sea captain built the house for a woman he married in Los Angeles, and then brought to Catalina. After he set her up in the house, he took off in his ship and was gone for six months. When he returned, she was gone. Apparently, she got lonely, hated that her husband had left her there, and she set sail with a different sea captain! The sea captain who built the house refused to let another woman enter the house for the rest of his life! (Honestly, I didn't blame the woman. At the time the sea captain built the house, Catalina was very isolated. They didn't have the daily ferries to the island that they have today.)

Great stories, The first story is funny..poor guy! The second is bad enough just flying back home for the trip and then having to fly back and drive the 600k back home.....but what he found was even worse (or ...truthfully...made it all worthwhile...) I have never heard of mystery trips. So this conversation earns three gold stars from me!
