Pfff Northerners

So, at the beach yesterday I witnessed 100's of people tip-toe-ing the waters edge and fewer people in the water. It was Clearwater beach in Florida, near about where I live.
Now to most people this is a sign the water is nice, and who wouldn't think it on a 83 degree sunny sunny sunny day. The rest of the week has been really warm as well. So anyone with a pool would think "Sure, it's been warming for days.
With the constant wind we are actually getting some waves too! Most of the time the gulf of mexico just looks like a placid pool of water rather than a part of the ocean. But the wind is stirring the gulf and pulling even colder water to the shoreline. Instead of the shore being slightly warmer as it's shallow.
Me being the maniacal guy I am suggests that my girlfriends mom take a slow motion video of us running to the water. Five of the people in the group agree. Now the funny part is... they aren't from here and they don't get to see the beach EVER. So I'm thinking that I'll play run to the water and stop short before hitting the brisk ice water that is the Gulf.
Everything was working perfectly. My girlfriend even joined in on it. She knows how the beach works and should know how cold it will be, but I sold the idea of the slom-mo video to well. She was joining.
We began sprinting to the water. I noticed that I began running faster than everyone, yet they were hot on my heels to catch up. Quickly I think to fake trip in the sand. Yeeeeeaaaaa....... I ate it a little to hard, and by ate it. I mean the sand. Eww! To my surprise the only yelp I hear is my girlfriend who jumped like a scared cat when she hit the water. Her family grabbed her suddenly as she tried to escape the water and really fought to get her in.
They weren't even phased by the water. They stayed in it for hours and hours. My bones would have had frostbiten!!! In the end of my diabolical scheme to get the innocent northerners in the water I had ended up the joke. At least to me. I got a mouthful of sand, and I had my girlfriend wrestled into something she didn't wanna step into.
Between you and me I loved watching my girl go down. So....half win!

Best thing I've read this morning. Yes, us northerners grew up swimming in some mighty cold water. (lakes of Northern Saskatchewan in my case as I am no where near an ocean.)
Your story reminds me of a winter's evening a friend ran and jumped into a cold river expecting it to be warm. ( They drain the pool fed by a hot spring every night and people like to sit in the hot stream instead of the pool)
They hadn't timed it right and the stream was wintery cold. He managed to smile and relax and stay in there until the rest caught up and jumped in so he wasn't the only one.

We Northerners aren't a bunch of sissies. Heck we have the Polar Bear club where everyone runs into the freezing cold water in the middle of winter. Fun story to read though

Well, that was a funny story, and it just goes to show you that things don't always go as planned! Hope you got the sand cleaned out of your mouth (along with the egg off your face?) lol j/k
