I was born with Cerebral Palsy. I am in a wheelchair. My brain experienced a lack of oxygen due to premature birth. God has enabled me to overcome obstacles. After eight years, I earned my BA degree.
I am currently serving on my state Developmental Disabilities Council. I advocate for the full inclusion and equality of people with disabilities throughout my state.

I have a 10 year old nephew who has Cerebral Palsy. He is in a wheelchair. He is very smart. Reading your story is very inspiring. I know he will also go far in live in spite of the many obstacles that he will face. Thank you for sharing your story.

I am slightly disabled---beside my natural myopia (near-sightedness), I 'survived' a Traumatic Brain-Injury---was paralyzed and suspected to be bedridden the rest of my life, but rehabilitated back to 'walking with a slight balance-problem' (along with the risks that come with 'having had a TBI'---harder to get along with others, susceptible to more injuries, etc.)
So I sort-of see 'both sides of the inclusion-&-equality argument'---you ought to be wherever- and do whatever-brings you peace; but maybe if you're not able to include yourself, you weren't meant to be included.
God enabled you to do it, Amen. God also enabled Eve to eat the Forbidden Fruit. Amen.

Hi @mythociate
I am glad you are doing so well following your TBI. I agree with what you say regarding inclusion. Many people are not able to be included without the appropriate supports. However, there are people that can't or won't acknowledge that reality.

@MandaLee It's kind of like Christianity---while we like to focus on 'how Father God has given us everything in the universe to claim as our own,' we take it with a regular dose of "how much we don't deserve it and haven't earned it' ... which I suppose makes us feel that--as Stan Lee's Peter "Spider-man" Parker's uncle said--"With great power comes great responsibility." When we "glean" one of the 'Gifts given by God," that 'regular guilt trip' reminds us that "we ought to use the gift to better fulfill His will for this world."

I commend you. I worked with children with intellectual disabilities including one child with Down Syndrome. I have seen amazing transformations in him in the last year and a half. Through him and others I have learned not to underestimate the potential of those who struggle with disabilities. I have seen, read and heard some pretty amazing stories. I commend you on your success and your contribution to equality for those with disabilities.

Hi MandaLee, and thank you for sharing some information about yourself! I think it is GREAT that you have worked so hard and furthered yourself, and that you advocate for people with disabilities in your state. Many people, myself included, have never attended college at all! By any chance, do you work with a group called People First? I work for a company that provides services to people with mental or physical disabilities. They live in homes of two or three per home....it is THEIR home; they pay all the bills out of their incomes, we just come in to their homes and assist them with whatever each individual needs. One of the gentlemen that lives in the home I assist in has Cerebral Palsy. Like you, he was also born premature. He has shared so much of his background and life with me, as I have worked with him for over two years now. He is such a joy and a breath of fresh air. He has a phenomenal sense of humor, and he thrives on picking on people - especially his staff - and enjoys it when they pick back. All in good fun, he's not mean-spirited in any way, nor does he mean anyone any harm. While he hasn't furthered his education, as you have done, he does hold down two part-time jobs in our community, and is very active on his computer. He also is the Treasurer for the county chapter of People First of Ohio, the state we live in. He is very active in assisting with their fund-raising functions. I am so inspired by people who thrive in all circumstances and make the best from what they have. You're awesome! :)

That's a neat job there, and sounds like a place that is perfect for someone who actually knows what they are talking about. I get tired of seeing groups of people making decisions for those that dont include the populace in question (like men making women's health decisions)
