Information is too easy to get.

When I was in school I had a very wise teacher one year that told his students it was not what you knew that was important. What was important was if you knew how to find the answer. Back then we had encyclopedias and reference books that you had to use in the library and this teacher was promoting the very good idea that learning how to read well and how to do research was more important than any other thing you could learn in school. If you could do these two things anything else you wanted to learn was at your fingertips.
Then came along the internet. As I learned how to use a computer I found that search engines shortened the time it took to do research and made it much easier. So, now I have trained myself to google things before making statements about them when I am unsure of my facts. This has saved me from many embarrassing moments. However, the downside to this ease of getting information is that sometimes your cherished beliefs can be shot full of holes. I found this out when I was checking a date for a comment I was making earlier and found that the date didn't matter because the song I thought was written by one of my heroes was not his. And to make matters worse I found out some disturbing facts about his life that while they explained his behavior. they were very hard to hear.
I'll get over that though because I still stand by the thought that knowing how to read well and do research is the most important life lessons.

So very true. Too bad some teachers focus far to much on SAT tests and getting the answers right. Life is not about taking SAT tests, it's about interacting and as you mentioned it's best to look things up before making statements that can be disproven.

I learned that lesson the hard way right here on mylot years ago. I got a good dressing down from one of the members that had been here way longer than I had. I treasure his friendship now and I am glad he didn't mind putting me in my place. .
I, too, hate the fact that schools are so focused on teaching the test that the knowledge they should impart gets lost.

Knowing how to find the information is good, but what you do with that information is even more important.
