A clue in the egg mystery?

A few days ago I wrote about the mystery of the disappearing eggs http://www.mylot.com/post/3044810/they-re-not-doing-themselves-any-favours Basically if I let the chickens out relatively early, then I get fewer eggs than I expect. In the past the chickens have sometimes laid eggs under a bush; usually I find them or on one occasion some magpies found the hiding place and had a feast, but this time I can’t find any hidden anywhere. @LadyDuck suggested that some animal might be stealing them and carrying them off. Well a few days ago we found a clue – as we were clearing accumulated dead leaves from around the house, we found an egg hidden among them. This is in a place that the chickens have not had access to. Then a couple of days later I found another, this time under a bush. Both the eggs looked stained, as if they had been there for a while, and when I cracked them they were obviously not fresh, although they weren’t rotten either. So I guess they must have been there a week or two – and that would correspond with the missing ones. So what could be hiding them? It does look as though some animal has managed to carry them away, and has then either stashed them for eating later, or has failed to get into them. What could it be? We have loads of grey squirrels about – do they eat eggs? I know hedgehogs like eggs, but I haven't seen any about - would one be able to carry an egg? What do you think? I cannot imagine any animal stealing an egg and not eating it immediately. Maybe whatever animal it was got chased by another animal and had to leave the first egg, then was caught after stealing another.

@Fleura I realise that it sounds extremely unlikely, but I am at a loss to think of a better solution.

Maybe, but it was hidden so carefully it doesn't look as if it was abandoned in a hurry. There are so many secretive things going on just under our noses, I wish I knew!

One of my neighbors have hens I have found one egg yesterday hidden in a flower pot in our garden. Now I have to discover which animal is stealing the eggs and carrying them around. I know that there are martens in this area, they are similar to ferrets and have the bad habit to chew the cables of the cars, in fact we have a special product to spray where there is the car motor. I suspect them, more than the rats.

Surely a marten would eat the egg within a day or so?

@Asylum Surely they would, but the egg was clean and I think it was placed there no more than a few hours before. I am sure it was not there the day before.

@Fleura I have seen how they do at the house of my grandmother, one lay on the back and take the egg with the 4 paws and another rat pull him using the tail. I could not believe my eyes, but they were capable to climb stairs that way.

That is interesting, but I still don't think that fits - the first egg we found was more than 20 metres away from where the chickens were and the animal would have to carry the egg up some steps - or else go an even longer way around.

I'm surprised your chickens are out again. Have the restrictions been lifted in your area?

Yes, according to the DEFRA map we are outside the high-risk area. We are supposed to take precautions to keep them away from wild birds as much as possible.

That's too funny! I have no idea who would be stealing the eggs and hiding them but it would be interesting if you ever see any animals out there hiding eggs! Maybe it's an Easter Bunny!

I wish I had some of those hidden cameras around the place, there must be so much going on that we have no idea about!

How about rats? I saw some big rats when we first move here that snatched the eggs of our chicken the stashed them under a tree.

I would have guessed a squirrel, they are supposed to hide things and then forget about them. Keep an eye for the one wearing the little bandit mask!
