Qwertyuiop - The Day the Husband Learned "the Computer" - Dear Mill Otters (My Lotters), you and I let our fingers race up and down the computer keyboards in the belief that what we are thinking is what will be shown on other people's computer monitor screens - and mostly, that is what happens. We type and "they" read. Things are not quite so with people who are new to computer keyboards and how to use them. As an example of this, I was treated to today's words about computer typing from my grandson-in-law. He was here with me at the house. My granddaughter, his wife, was in another location far from home, but her business runs mostly by computer and the computer is here at the house. In came some computer stuff. Grandson kind of panicked. He contacted his computer-savvy wife on the phone and received her instructions as to what he should do. He asked some questions and she provided good answers as best she could. At one point, she told him to hit the "escape" button. He assured her that he would escape if only he could figure out how best to do so. "Well, go ahead and tap the "CTRL" key. The "count-Right-and Left key" he asked? "Well, do a Tab instead of that" He spoke into the telephone - " We have no Tab, but I can grab a Pepsi from the refrigerator I suppose." "You are messing everything up," she said, "so hit the alternate key now." "You mean that it does not matter what key I hit? I can pick an alternate key and pop a finger to it?" "Oh yes," he asked, "will the computer go into another gear if I press 'shift?'" And so it went. I wonder what the customer thought about all of this? Image - Keyboard - Gus Kilthau

@Jessicalynnt - I believe that he may already have learned the important lesson (as far as he was concerned, anyway) that ignorance is more bliss than is learning the keys and being laboring over them at times his wife is away from her computer. -Gus-

I laughed so hard at this that I felt bad for laughing at him Some people are not familiar with computer terms, that's all.

Funny, so your title is incorrect then? That particular husband didn't really learn the keyboard unless you're poking fun and he listed to any instructions from you to learn it after all?

@MarshaMusselman - Ms Marsha - Well, no. MY title is very correct (I am indeed the "King of the World"). However, that husband declined to learn lots of stuff about the computer keyboard. There is good reason for not wanting to learn about all of those keys. If a person learns all about the keyboard, that person is very likely to be chosen as the one who must sit in front of the keyboard and w-o-r-k those keys and the rest of it all instead of drinking coffee and watching shows on the telly. Why do that? -Gus-

@Ceerios Oddly enough this comment just showed up in my notifications even though you wrote it over a week ago, actually two weeks ago today. Funny, but you didn't say anything in your title or post about 'king of the world'. Maybe you were meaning to relate to that phrase on a different post instead. Still odd that it just showed up and I know I saw it earlier because I was already here and liked it.

@sallypup - Ms Lenore - It is kind of like flying an aircraft. Dont try to land on a keyboard until you are flying level right over those keys. -Gus-

@Ceerios I have even more issues when one of the cats insists on sitting near the keyboard then accidentally one of their limbs drapes over the keys.

Thanks for a good laugh before bedtime. That sounds a lot like my husband. He can't figure out my computer and I can't figure out his smartphone.

@lookatdesktop - It's much like your username. Many have to really look before they tap on a key. -Gus-

@JudyEv - Ms Judy -A person has to take CTRL and then Shift into a whole new way to TAB all the new stuff so that the machine can COPY things to the degree that the writer PASTES their meanings in a way that won't ALTernate with wrong jargon. -Gus-
