The Interrupting Phone Call

So I was in the middle of watching Dr Strange when the phone began ringing. I wanted to ignore it so badly but when I saw who it was, I put the movie on pause and answered it.
It was my niece. It's been a very long time since she called me just to talk. Normally, I have to make the first move as far as chatting or having a real talk. But our relationship is obviously back on solid ground because she picked up the phone and called me to ask some advice about her sick cat. Poor thing has been so upset and worried. She actually called out sick from work today (she's a doctor) to stay home and tend to her cat (who may or may not have liver problems - the vet honestly can't tell for sure).
We had a long phone conversation about her sick cat and the other two healthy ones. And then she wanted to give me updates on some problems at the hospital where she works. Long way into that story, my phone began to beep as it was losing charge and I had to get off the phone.
But we're tentatively on to go out to dinner next Friday night. I told her I'll keep in touch this weekend (to see how the cat is doing), and if things look good during the week, we can definitely head out to eat and have a long face to face talk. She sounded pretty happy about that.
Hard to explain how happy I am about this, too. She and I used to be closer than most aunts and nieces. We share a birthday and only 12 years separate us. I never thought anything could tear us apart and yet it happened, so I'm thrilled things are back to the way they used to be. We've both worked very hard to come back together, and it's nice to see a happy ending.

She's understandably a mess over her cat and will be spending the weekend trying to get her cat to eat a little more. I told her I'd be home if she needs me for anything. If I had a car, I'd go over there to help her out. But I can cheer her on from my phone or the internet, at least, until we can get together. It really surprised me that she came to me for help and advice but it warmed my heart, as well, for so many reasons. I've been praying for the day when we could just picked up the phone again and chatter away the way we used to.

Besides being aunt and niece, we always had a friendship just underneath it all and today that friendship is getting us through. For her to be able to call upon me for help and advice warms my heart and lets me know that I'm important to her. I'm really hoping we can get together on Friday. I know we'd have a lot of fun.

Yes, it's very good. We've learned how to close the door on the past and just love each other again. And that's as it should be for everyone!

It's good that you and your niece are drawing closer after a long estrangement. I've had to pause a conversation to plug my phone in.

Hi Claudia,
I am so happy that you and your niece are reconnecting. I love my relationship with both of my aunts, so I am especially thrilled that you two can move past former issues to move forward in a positive direction. Congratulations.
