Do you feel pain in your hand while crocheting?

While browsing through various DIYs on YouTube I came across the art of crocheting and fell in love with it. Since then I have been learning new stitches, new designs and what not. These days I am crocheting a set of six cushion covers using granny square pattern. Suddenly today I started feeling severe pain in my wrist. It is unbearable. It gets worse when I move my wrist for crocheting. So I had to stop. I think I have not been giving rest to my hand because of which this pain has started. Hence I have decided to not crochet for some time. Besides I read about it on the Internet and there it talks about CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME which mostly happens to crocheters. I hope it's just my muscles getting fatigue and not anything else or I will have to leave crocheting forever. And that will be a very sad thing for me. Have any of you felt this kind of shooting pain in their wrist while crocheting? If yes, then what did you do to treat it? And do you still crochet?

I haven't done crochet in my life, but have watched people doing that. They do complain that they face pain in their wrist. Is it that bad, Hope you get well soon and be back on what you like to do.

Yes it is very painful. But thanks to the pain killers I feel much better. Getting back to crocheting will take sometime as I have been advised to give rest to my hands. Thanks for the wishes though.

It sounds to me more like tenosynovitis (inflammation of the tendon sheath) than carpal tunnel syndrome. I have had this and it is very painful. The treatment I was given was a week's course of aspirin (ibuprofen would work as well) three times a day, to help reduce the inflammation and a strong bandage to restrict the movement of the tendons in the wrist. It is best to rest the hand completely until the inflammation goes away, but that is very hard to do! Carpal tunnel syndrome is a pressure on the nerve in the wrist and tends to cause tingling and numbness in the thumb and fingers and, sometimes, a dull pain in the arm. I have recently started to learn to crochet and I find that I get cramp in the left hand after some time but that is because I still feel awkward with keeping the tension in the yarn. I am trying out different methods of holding the yarn to find what is the most comfortable way for me!

I totally get your point. That's what is happening with me as well. Just to maintain the tension of the yarn I have to put an extra pressure on my left hand. And thats the cause of this pain. I haven't been able to yet find a comfortable way of handling the yarn. I am trying not to move my affected hand as much as I can. The pain is now very dull as I took a pain killer few hours back. I think It's better for me to wait for at least a few weeks before starting again.
