Switchel, swizzle, switzel, WOW!

This beverage may not be everyone's favorite, but it is becoming one of mine. It is sort of like instant kvass, because although it will ferment over time it is also delicious the very next day. If a hybrid between switchel and kvass already has a name I don't know what it is, but I call mine GAG, which describes how most of my friends who haven't tasted it and don't intend to feel about it, but it is an acronym for Grapefruit and ginger. There are many ways to make switchel but most include a little bit of vinegar plus up to 3 times as much sweetener (can be brown sugar, honey, molasses, or whatever) and enough ginger to light it on fire. I like grapefruit juice in mine. Does that sound good or gag to you? What name do you know it by?

I've never heard of it before. I wonder if you could take that for health reasons rather than the pure vinegar brew many are now doing from the grocery stores? I like vinegar although I'm not sure that I'd drink it for a drink, but I'd call it interesting before I had taste.

Probably a big yes on that, @MarshaMusselman and I think it becomes an acquired taste as over time I have come to like a bit more vinegar and less honey in my home made "longevity tonic" which in a mixture of diluted AC vinegar and honey. Since the apple switchel turns into AC vinegar in time, that is one of my favorite flavors to make, along with strawberry and cherry.

@MarshaMusselman On the East Coast they sell it bottled in stores, but not so much here. We can get kombucha in the supermarkets now, though.

@drannhh I doubt I'd make it myself, but I'd be willing to try it otherwise.

@chrissbergstrom To acquire the taste I did start out with less vinegar and more sugar. What kinds of beverages do you like?
