Always learning something new

During a discussion with @MALUSE about my up and coming travels to venture around the last of the South African unconquered Lighthouses I found this little bit of information: DID YOU KNOW: "The Cape of Good Hope is the legendary home of The Flying Dutchman. Crewed by tormented and damned ghostly sailors, it is doomed forever to beat its way through the adjacent waters without ever succeeding in rounding the headland. Adamastor is a Greek-type mythological character invented by the Portuguese poet Luís de Camões in his epic poem Os Lusíadas (first printed in 1572), as a symbol of the forces of nature Portuguese navigators had to overcome during their discoveries and more specifically of the dangers Portuguese sailors faced when trying to round the Cape of Storms" Cabo das Tormentas South Africa is the tip of Africa and all in all, we have 49 Lighthouses around the coast. Some are of great historical value and many have saved ships from sinking during the stormy seasons. We are called the Cape of Storms for a reason which the explorers soon discovered: Niccolò da Conti, Vasco da Gama, Bartolomeu Dias, Jan van Riebeeck, Christopher Columbus. Ship Graveyards: "The Southern Tip of Africa is littered with the wrecks of over 140 ships that met their violent end along its tempestuous coastline. Thousands of lives and precious cargoes have been lost in its raging storms and ravenous waters." So a little chat with ML took me on a history journey of discovery. Great things we get up to while we read, listen and learn here on MyLot!

I enjoy learning the mix of lore and legend with some history thrown in. There's a lot of determination shown by those ancient explorers in making their journeys of discovery.

Isn't it interesting how a little discussion can lead to going on a search and discovering unknown history?

I wonder why the poor Cristoforo Colombo has always his name translated to English while all the other explorers not. I love to learn something new every day and I now realize that I do not know a lot about Niccolò dé Conti.
