Shipping Insurance for jewelry

I am looking for advice from anyone who has ever had to ship jewelry items through the mail or a courier service like FedEx or UPS. I need to send out a few items to people who are a few states away -- too far to deliver them in person, but too valuable to not have them insured. I've done some initial checking, but am looking for advice from anyone with experience on this issue. I want to get maximum coverage and the most reasonable price.

I ultimately sent it by Registered Mail from the post office. It worked well!

I ship via USPS with additional insurance and signature confirmation if necessary and the prices are reasonable. I never had any lost mail.

Insurance is about the same cost whether you ship USPS, UPS, or FedX. The important thing is to take photos of the jewelry before shipping. It's easier to make a claim if you have to if you have photos. Have someone watch you pack it and go to the post office with you. Make sure you get a return receipt so you know who accepted it and have their handwriting to prove it got there--or not. Don't insure a $200 shipment for $600, that always looks suspect and will make it harder to win a claim. I'm sure it will get there just fine but assume it won't and act accordingly.

Not sure how it works, but do know that the post office does offer it with any package.
