Going Blind and Batty

I can't take it anymore! I wish I can just go away and return to a completed family room. I'm not cut out for decisions. My husband is not cut out for exorbitant prices. And neither of us is cut out for pouring over fabrics and making choices for window treatments in our new family room. I've met with our decorator four times, not counting multiple emails and phone calls. My husband is not willing to pay what the window treatments will cost. Neither am I. Today I had a new decorator consult with us. She gave us more ideas and will get back to us. Thursday, we have an appointment with a decorator suggested by our younger son. They have an advertising account with him. I have one last appointment with a woman who made our bedroom duvet, Euro shams, pillows, and decorative bed pillows, draperies for our bedroom, two bathrooms, valences for our master bath and bedroom closet windows. I am blind from looking at fabrics and making decisions. I want the room to look beautiful, but my husband finally put his foot down over the cost. I had no idea that fabrics can be so costly and labor just as much. I'm feeling pretty grumpy right now.

@infatuatedbby It's worse, because I'm starting from scratch with each decorator now. Some of that fabric you see is on our chairs and sofas.

Thank you. We were very floored especially after having her do our new family room. And the price was discounted since we've been such good customers over the years. The labor cost was pathetic!

Thanks. I hope so, too. We spent a fortune on a new floor, carpentry, paint, furniture, area rug, and chandelier before we left for Florida. Now those windows must get done and look great, too. Ugh!

Easier said than done. My windows are huge and different heights and shapes. They need custom work, and must be able to keep the sun from fading our new furniture.

I can usually make a quick decision as to what I want. I am not too fussy and can be content with almost anything when it comes to decorating. To tell you the truth, I'm not much of a decorator and maybe that is why.

@DianneN Women! I remember taking my 2nd wife to buy a watch that for our anniversary. Finally she was trying to decide between two choices but couldn't and so I bought them both. Problem easily solved!

I usually know what I want, but I like to take my time when it comes to prices and want to put things together myself (which I don't have the time or means to do so most of the time) - so my "projects" can take a long time. Hubby can be quicker about decisions regardless of price, but he doesn't think about "decor" as much as I do as long as it's functional . . . and he wants to do so many things all at once, so I have to stop him in his tracks! Yep, decision making about these home things can be a pain . . . I feel ya!

@DianneN Oh but I love that you think everything is beautiful . . . that's the way it should be! Whatever is comfortable to you in your home is what's important. That's what should be the deciding factor .

We've made so many decorating boo boos over the years. It pays to take the time and consider the flow from room to room, colorwise. It's a big pain, especially since I have difficulty making a decision. To me, everything is beautiful!

Get yourself a sewing machine and do it yourself it will be a whole lot cheaper and you will have a satisfaction of having done it yourself! I am sure you are very talented! What you save on that will go towards a well earned cruise!

@DianneN Haha well done. Glad you managed to get a good price for it. I hate these people who rip people off. Surely they should know that a lot of work is spread by word of mouth. if they are reliable and good that will boost their reputations. If they con people that will also spread too.

Yes, material is very, very high. One of my problems was the repeat on a pattern. Double the yardage. Another problem is the varied sized and amount of windows in that room. You are very lucky your sis in law sewed them for you. The labor cost we received was astronomical!

@DianneN Having a repeating pattern is the pits. I know it takes so much more material. Never mind - you could make the rest up into pot-holders.

If I had energy, ambition, and a better sewing machine, I would make my own window coverings. Oh, and let's not forget time. One needs time to do it all too. I am currently using curtains that I have had for many years. Some were given to me that belonged to a dear friend. Others bought at the Goodwill or Salvation Army. I have found some really nice curtains there.

The first one decorated our new family room from floor to ceiling. I choose fabrics for the window treatments last week. It was the price and more, the cost of labor, that made us say no way! She then found an error, lowered her price, and then lowered it further because we've been such good customers. Something sounded fishy, so the next decorator came yesterday, called today, and tomorrow we meet with someone else. Btw, they are all very gifted. I've seen their work. We are extremely pleased with our new family room so far. Nice to see you!

maybe the fabrics or the drapes are way too costly? and it is not also right for the rooms of your house? could it be possible that the persons decorating your home want higher fees for their work? i hope everything will turn out all right, my friend.

The fabrics were expensive, and we knew that, but the labor costs were jacked up. Since then, I've learned that that decorator is known for hiking the prices up. We have two decorators who have come to offer suggestions for our windows and one of them is coming with fabrics on Tuesday. If I don't care for them, I will have the other decorator show me fabrics. I can't wait until this is over!!!

@DianneN it seems jacking up the prices is common now. a doctor in the secondary hospital where i worked as the head nurse, jacked up his professional fee on a patient since the said patient was cared for by her kids working abroad. Dr. SL did that in almost all his clients hospitalized in that hospital. karma got its place, because now, he is sick.
